“Fashions fade. Style is eternal.” ~ Yves Saint Laurent
This month’s Fashion Issue of GoMag features covergirl Ali Grusha of Hamburg, Pennsylvania. Her myriad of talents include equestrian, photographer, graphic designer and healthcare business development specialist. Grusha also has a passion for fashion and appropriately competes with her gelding, First Class Style (Carlos) in the all-around events under the guidance of Chris Gray.
Ali enjoys working with show clothing designers and is influenced in her arena attire by the fashion runway. Twelve Years ago, Grusha attended a barrel racing clinic with Sharon Camarillo. Camarillo made a statement that stuck with her; “If you look good, you feel good, you ride good.” Years later, Ali still tries to apply that philosophy to her design choices.
Ali’s showmanship jacket was constructed by Melissa Ilic of New Jersey. “Melissa measured me and we looked at couture gowns on Pinterest for inspiration and I told her to run with it. What was delivered was more than I could have imagined.” For her hunt seat events, Ali works with BooYah Custom Clothing. “Elizabeth ‘Spike’ Brewer is great to work with and her shirts and coats fit me the best of any designer,” says Ali.
Ali first started showing AQHA in 2009 with her beloved Divination. This duo went on to be Congress Champions in the Novice Amateur Showmanship in 2011. In 2013, Divination passed suddenly and Chris Gray found First Class Style from Dickerson Quarter Horses. Ali says she instantly fell in love with the big, red gelding. She describes Carlos as, “the smartest horse I’ve ever owned. I keep him at home and have done the all-around training on him myself.”
In 2014, Ali and Carlos were AQHA World Show finalists in the Amateur Hunter Under Saddle. The duo also had multiple Congress Top Ten placings and won several year-end high point awards. Ali and Carlos are already qualified for this year’s AQHA World Show and she also has a three year old hunt seat horse, PSU I Dare You To, that she is looking forward to campaigning and showing at the Congress in the three year-old futurities.
