The Jeff Brujack shows hosted by Tom Powers and crew started an exciting week of horse showing in Berrien Springs, Michigan, June 23rd through the 25th. Horse trailers from all around the country could be seen in the camping area…not just from the Midwest but as far away as California, New York, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Missouri, and Iowa.
There is always a chance to see the up and coming two years-olds getting worked in the practice pens, and there is a buzz in the air as the futurity approaches. This event is unique in that it is still held outside in Berrien Springs, Michigan.
Like in the past, weather is a factor this year as thunderstorms, rain and wind have caused plenty of excitement. The weather was perfect until Tuesday, when storms rolled in forcing breaks in showing, and trail was moved indoors. A power outage made things difficult for awhile, but the Powers team worked diligently to keep the show rolling. The power was restored, skies were clearing, and the stage was set for the futurity.
The Tom Powers Futurity is currently underway with horses like The Best Martini and Rewind and Repeat making their mark in futurity history with wins. Started in 1980, The Tom Powers Futurity is the oldest continuously operating pleasure futurity in the World.
It began with two classes, Two Year Old Western Pleasure and Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle. Total payback the first year was $3500.00. There were about twenty five total entries. Classes were held at Tom’s farm in Ada, Michigan either outside in the mud, or in the indoor arena 60 by 240 feet long and dusty.
Despite the unpleasant conditions, the Futurity continued to grow each year. Now entries are well over one thousand and paybacks over $275,000 plus trophies and awards.
