It is profound and sobering how life can change in an instant. Just ask Jerry and Julie Slemp of Louisa, Virginia. They know all too well how lives can be turned upside down and change forever. On December 12, 2009, AQHA Professional Horseman and trainer Jerry Slemp was riding a horse around in the arena while his wife and friends were decorating for their annual Christmas party.
Sixteen year-old Bree Tamulewicz of Westerville, Ohio somehow managed to maintain a 4.0 grade point average while on the road showing and winning the Youth All-Around in the nation-- that is quite a feat for anyone who knows how difficult it is to attend a regular high school and maintain good grades while hauling down the road. This duo's win is also quite impressive considering they have been partners for a very short time.
The past five months have been challenging for trainer Jamie Hartman of Springfield, Missouri. On September 6th, 2011, Hartman was involved in a terrible accident when she was hit by a car while jogging near her home. She fractured her skull and shoulder; suffered a decompressed knee; and had a compound fracture of her the tibia and fibula of her right leg. Due to her injuries, Hartman had a rod placed in her right leg as well as plates and screws in her head, knee, and leg.
With the Super Bowl fast approaching this weekend, GoHorseShow wanted to spotlight a horse and rider team who combines
football and horses in their every-day life. Kansas City Chief
cheerleader, Susie Derouchey, with help from her horse trainer, Merle Arbo, prepare "Warpaint" for the electric atmosphere at Arrowhead Stadium for
eight home games a year.
Stephanie Bain Gill of Erie, Michigan has been showing horses since she was old enough to walk in the show pen. Little did she know, she would own a once-in-a-lifetime show mare and broodmare turned therapeutic riding horse, turned show horse again for Stephanie's son and mother. These types of horses usually stay under the radar because they don't win world championships, but they change the lives of everyone around them for the better.
GoHorseShow is happy to report of another well known horse and rider that have become a team. Reserve World Champion rider, Peyton Bivins of Amarillo, Texas has purchased AQHA Reserve Super Horse and Congress Champion, Kamanyawannadance (Collin), from judge and trainer Leslie Lange of Greeley, Colorado.
Horse showing seems to stay in your blood no matter where you end up, especially for Amateur competitor Jason Wanderer of Los Angeles, California. This New Jersey native showed as a youth on the East Coast before attending college in Colorado, and, then, finally moving to Los Angeles where he has lived for the past 13 years. During all these moves and changes, Wanderer has continued to pursue his love for horses.
Amateur exhibitor James Story of Birmingham, Alabama may not look like the typical horse show exhibitor, but he has always marched to the beat of a different drum. Last year was Story's first full year showing on the Quarter Horse circuit in the halter events. Story also has some rather unusual hobbies including hunting, taxidermy, raising Koi fish, and he is also an expert in plant identification and gardening.
Many people in the industry are well aware of trainers, John and Jill Briggs, and their success in the horse industry, but there may be some that wonder whatever happened to his younger brother, Peter Briggs. Well, Briggs became a trainer like his brother, but not the kind you would probably expect. He is now an elephant keeper at the Fort Worth Zoo!
Danielle Zenga and A Fancy Ryder of Weston, Florida ended on a high note this year when they won the Youth High Point in the Nation in the Hunter Under Saddle. Her trainer, Carrie Grose, also came away with the Open High Point in the Hunter Under Saddle. "I still can’t believe that I won the youth, and it was made that much sweeter by Carrie winning the open with Ryder. Carrie so deserves this win, and, of course, it has been a dream come true for me," Danielle told GoHorseShow.
Trainer Robert Smith of RJS Quarter Horses, Palominos, and Paints located in Glendale, Arizona started showing horses when he was 15 years-old. His first show was the Men's Western Pleasure at a local Georgia open show when he worked for the late Kiff Parrish. Smith has come a long way since then.
AQHA judge and multiple World Champion hunt seat rider, Gigi Bailey, of De Pere, Wisconsin gave everyone quite a scare at the AQHA World Show in November. During the finals of the Senior Hunter Under Saddle, Bailey started having trouble breathing and as soon as she finished backing her horse in the line-up, she was carried out of the arena by two grown men to wait for the paramedics to arrive.
Sixty year-old Sue DePalma of Albion, New York is definitely the comeback kid. This Select Amateur showed for the first time in 28 years at the Florida Gold Coast. She made her successful return in the Novice Showmanship and placed both days under all the judges.
With the knowledge of people's varying opinions about War Horse
on many social media sites, I went into the Steven Spielberg movie with
an open mind but realistic expectations. The polarizing opinions about
the film piqued my interest, and I was looking forward to viewing it and
drawing my own conclusions.
GoHorseShow would like to thank Rusty and Katie Green for letting us know that multiple Congress Champion, Whatscookngoodlookin, has been sold to youth exhibitor Hillary Roberts of Edmond, Oklahoma. The coming four year-old affectionately known as, Candy, is by A Good Machine and out of A Cooki For Certain. Candy and Rusty Green are undefeated in every two and three-year-old futurity they have competed in the past two years. Quite a streak!
