The cover of the August issue of GoMag features amateur Kari Jewell of Walcott, Iowa.

“Horses are karmic and they come to us in our lives karmically, when it is time for us truly to learn.” This quote by dressage trainer Dominique Barbier could not hold more true than the day MWS Flashn My Jacks came into Kari Jewell’s life.

“Following the loss of my dad from leukemia, I was at Gordyville watching trail practice,” Kari recalls. “Jennifer Leckey was on a sorrel horse with big white socks, and I noticed how soft he looked over the poles. It was as if my dad made sure Flashy came into my life at the right moment. When I told my trainer, Millissa Daurer that I wanted to buy him, she was slightly shocked since I wasn’t in the market for a new horse. I’m so grateful to everyone involved, especially Sandy Walker, for allowing me to own Flashy.”

In her first year, Kari showed Flashy in pleasure and hunter under saddle while Millissa showed him in the Green Trail. This year, they started adding showmanship, horsemanship and equitation to his resume.

“There have even been times this year when we’ve led the nation in Novice Amateur Horsemanship, which was unexpected but exciting,” Kari says.

While Flashy is learning trail and western riding, her friend, Lauren Stepaniak had the idea that Kari could learn these same events on her seasoned 22 year-old horse, Native Iron. So, Kari leased Stan for the year.

“Learning all these events on two different horses has been somewhat frustrating. I’ve had my share of meltdowns this year, but I am hopefully progressing as a rider,” Kari says. “I’m so lucky that I get to travel down the road with my mom, two good friends, Millissa and Lauren, and two talented sorrel horses with white socks. I can only hope my dad is looking down at us and thinking that sending Flashy to me was one of the best decisions he ever made.”
