Upgrades Approved to Keep Quarter Horse Congress at State Fairgrounds

A $22 million contract with Smoot Construction Co. for major construction work at the Ohio Expo Center was approved on Monday by the state Controlling Board.

The work is being done with $38 million allocated by the state last year for improvements at the fairgrounds, largely to ensure that the lucrative All American Quarter Horse Congress will continue holding its annual event in Ohio.

The money will be used to build a huge 180,000-square-foot barnlike structure incorporating 1,000 horse stalls, and an additional 100,000-square-foot multipurpose building. Work has started on the barn structure but not the second building, for which existing structures will have to be demolished first.
