Owner Teresa Porter shares her thoughts about her once-in-a-lifetime mare, Once In A Dream who passed away on Monday March 30, 2015. “Dream” truly lived up to her name.
It is with a very heavy heart that I share with those who knew and loved the great mare, Once In A Dream, that the day came this morning for her to pass. She went out of this world on her own and was happy and healthy yesterday evening. I have to think she passed quickly and thank goodness at her age had no ailments or difficulties–only good memories of my wonderful girl.
Born in 1982 out of crossing the stallion Jerry Crow with Dream Straw, Dream was first trained by Andy Moorman where she was always loved especially by the youth kids who Dream taught to jump. This little mare was known for her impeccable form over the jumps.
The mare went on to win Congress titles and World Championships in 1991 Senior Working Hunter, 1989 and 1990 Reserve World Champion Working Hunter as well as numerous Top Ten placings in hunter hack and jumping while under the ownership of the Kaplow family and then Rodger Call and the late Ann Call. It was while with the Calls I first saw Dream at Youth World. I was mesmerized by this beautiful 15’3 hand red head. Industry greats would say, “She could jump the moon!”
I dreamed of owning her for years and one day in 2000, Ann called me up. Soon after that call, Dream who was in foal, was mine. I was lucky enough to get her back in shape after she had several foals for the Calls and showed her at Dixie Nationals in her 20’s and have a dear friend take her over a small fence at age 26. That mare could still tuck those knees up!
Dream had been a part of my family and we spent many happy moments with my nieces and nephew with this great girl. I am fortunate to now have her granddaughter, Annie and grandson, Herman. Herman is a spitting image of his famous Grandma Dream. This year will be the first year to show Herman will be very special with Dream’s passing. Dream inspired me to start my farm, Dream Quarter Horses.
Dream is now buried in the front of my Louisiana pasture where most of the mares go to foal and foals to wean. Dream always loved being the companion and teaching the young one’s manners. To her dying day she was healthy, sound and head of the pasture. The epitome of a great mare. So blessed to have shared so many years with this wonderful mare in my life. Love you Dream forever. You were truly “Once In A Dream”.
