NCEA Administrators Convene at Equestrian Summit

More than 20 intercollegiate athletics administrators from National Collegiate Equestrian Association sponsoring institutions and conferences convened in Dallas last Friday for a day-long meeting centered on implementing solutions for successfully positioning collegiate equestrian within the NCAA structure.

The strategies discussed were focused on addressing the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics’ recommendation to remove equestrian from the NCAA list of Emerging Sports for Women effective August 1, 2017. Representatives from the Big 12 Conference and Southeastern Conference, as well as athletics administrators from the majority of the NCEA sponsoring institutions were among those attending last Friday.
The NCEA provides opportunities for intercollegiate athletics participation for more than 800 female student-athletes at 22 participating institutions at both the NCAA Division I and Division II levels. Both the Big 12 and SEC sponsor conference championships in the sport of equestrian and the NCEA hosts a National Championship in Waco, Texas, annually for the top-12 collegiate equestrian teams.
