“All good things must come to an end.” That’s a saying that we have all heard often throughout the years. In the case of trainer, Jeff Mellott, he has ended an amazing chapter of his training career and is moving on to a new adventure. For the past 20 years, Mellott worked for Nancy Murfin-Moxley as the family’s private trainer at her facility in Wichita, Kansas. With the Murfin family slowing down and no longer needing a private trainer, Jeff decided it was time to make a move.
“Leslie Lange and I have been discussing joining forces for over a year, and I decided that it made more sense to go work with her in Colorado than to go out on my own,” Mellot told GoHorseShow. “I brought a few horses with me including Nancy’s horse, Tamu Zippin Asset, so I am going to continue helping her in the Select Amateur Events.”
Jeff also told us that his daughter, Kaylee, and her horse have moved with Jeff to Colorado. He told us that the most difficult part of moving to another state was leaving his wife behind. “She is a school teacher so she will move here after she retires in four years if everything goes as planned.”
AQHA World Champion and Judge, Leslie Lange, whose facility is located in Greeley, Colorado, says that she is excited that Mellott will be adding his expertise to her program.
“I look forward to combining our talents to help our clients every step of the way,” Lange states. “We are used to riding by ourselves, so I think now we will look forward to having another set of eyes to help each other and our clients.”
Mellott adds, “I have only been here a few weeks but it has been great so far. I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping clients and horses of all different levels. I have always enjoyed the process of teaching clients how to be better riders more than showing. The trainers in Colorado are a great group to work with, and it is a very active state that has big horse shows with great numbers and high quality horses.”
