BREAKING NEWS: Rodrocks Purchase Certain Potential

Exclusive for GoHorseShow.com

Multiple World Champion producing sire, Certain Potential, has been sold to Darol and Karen Rodrock, of Bucyrus, Kansas. “We are very excited to be adding Certain Potential to our family. He compliments our other stud, Only In The Moonlite, very well and we are fortunate to own two outstanding western pleasure stallions,” says Darol.

Certain Potential, formerly owned by Tim and Lou Petty of Ocala, Florida, is by Potential Investment and out of Miss Surely Bars and has a Total Life-Time Earnings of $48,046.37.

The 12-year-old bay stallion is most famous for being the sire of A Certain Vino, two-time World Champion and Reserve World Champion with Total Life Time Earnings of $196,921. He is also the sire of World and Reserve World Champion, CTC Imagination, as well as Potential Diva, Reserve World Champion with Total Life Time earnings of $83,039.68.

“This all happened very fast,” says Tim Petty. ”Gil Galyean approached us at the Reichert. We sold him because Darol and Karen gave us the opportunity to simplify our lives by getting out of the breeding business.”

“I’ve heard all the rumors,” Tim adds. “We are not getting out, we are not leaving Ocala and Lou will continue to show.” As far as the stud is concerned, “We are sad but we hope that Darol will continue his legacy – he’s a great horse.”

The Rodrocks became interested in purchasing the stallion when they had a hard time deciding who to breed to their daughters of Invitation Only. “I realized many people also shared the same problem,“ says Darol. “We have 14 own daughters of Invitation Only and they are all out of Zippo Pine Bar or Hotrodder Jet Set mares. Certain Potential crosses on everything he has bred, but I see a tremendous need for a top stallion who will cross on Invitation Only blood.”

“There’s no question that Certain Potential has proven himself as one of the top sires in the performance horse industry in the past few years,” says World Champion trainer, Gil Galyean. “His babies have strong hocks, are well made with excellent conformation and they often have withers higher than their croup.”

But the real reason Gil encouraged his long-time friend to consider purchasing Certain Potential is because “The leading trainers have such a high regard and respect for him.” Gil knows that “the trainers are very high on this horse and they want to ride them. If I was breeding a horse, I would want to raise a horse that trainers want in their barn.”

World Champion trainer, Cleve Wells, agrees. “There are no negatives with this stud, it’s all good.” Cleve adds, “The Certain Potentials fit every program. They’re pretty, they have bone and size.”

Cleve’s customers are expecting 13 babies by Certain Potential next year. “We did embryo transfers on all of our best mares to him because, like Zippo Pine Bar, he’s a public pleasing sire. People are going to like their babies, the trainers like them and a horse that the trainers enjoy riding is going to be worth some money.“

In addition to the stallion, Rodrock also purchased 10 broodmares including World Champion producers, as well an outstanding crop of 23 Certain Potential weanlings and yearlings. “At the very end, Darol let Lou keep her favorite weanling. They were very nice about the whole process,” Tim explains.

Certain Potential will stand at stud for 2009 at Gumz Farms in Kentucky. His stud fee will remain $3,000. “We are excited to add him to our lineup,” says Amy Gumz. “He provides the perfect outcross that the discriminating mare owner is looking for.”

The Rodrocks would like to thank Tim and Lou Petty for “doing such an outstanding job making Certain Potential such a great horse.” Darol says “He is outstanding and we are very excited about the future.”
