To say Vern and Rita Habighorst’s family has had a great 2009 championship season is a bit of an understatement. It started in August with their oldest granddaughter, Monica, winning the 2009 youth world championship in amateur aged geldings with Vern’s horse RPL My Te Cheerful. In September, Vern won the Select aged geldings with the same horse. Then at the All American Quarter Horse Congress in October, both Monica and Vern won youth and amateur halter grand championships. Since he had shown RPL My Te Cheerful at the Bayer Select World Championship Show, Vern brought another aged gelding, A Kid By Design, to the AQHA World Championship Show, and he won yet another world championship in aged geldings on November 11.
Vern and Rita own and operate Blue Ribbon Custom Tack, and have been a part of the AQHA showing community for a long time, even sponsoring several classes this year at the World Show. About two years ago, Vern returned to the show pen after an 18-year absence. The Journal spoke with the Habighorsts shortly after the win.
