The Tom Powers Triple Challenge Futurity Circuit ran June 19-26th with a Yearling Sale held on the 25th. This event is unique in that it is still held outside in Berrien Springs, Michigan which can either be a blessing or a curse. Exhibitors seem to enjoy returning year after year to the excellent campgrounds and great footing that has made this arena well known throughout the industry.
Weather is commonly a factor at the Powers and unfortunately this year was no exception. Thunderstorms, rain and wind caused plenty of excitement at this year’s show. “Cold” and “Miserable” were the words often used to describe this year’s weather. The indoor arena got a lot of use but, of course, outside is where everyone wants to show their young entries, many for the first time. They were able to show outside one day but it was very muddy.
Started in 1980, The Tom Powers Futurity is the oldest continuously operating pleasure futurity in the World. Over 30 years later, this is still the show where many of the top two and three-year old horses make their debut and the best maturity horses come out for a few laps around the pen.
