Colton Reid: Novice, Trainer-Less and Successful

Nineteen year-old Colton Reid of Sumrall, Mississippi had an amazing show at the Region 9 Championship Show in West Monroe, Louisiana this past weekend. He won three classes including the Novice Amateur Showmanship, Novice Amateur Trail, and Amateur Trail and came home with three gorgeous buckles. His equine partner, Only Include Me (Adella) and Reid don’t have a trainer, but they seemed to get along fine and shined above the rest. GoHorseShow wanted to find out more about Colton and his horse, Adella and what his future goals are in the show ring and in life.

Q: Hi Colton! So tell us how you got involved with horses?

A: My mom’s family has been involved with the horse show industry since the 1950s, and I wanted to follow in their footsteps. My favorite thing about the Quarter Horse is their ability to learn. We ask so much from them and they just keep giving!

Q: Tell me about your horse, Only Include Me, better known as Adella?

A: She is sired by Gucci Only and out of a Hotrodders Jet Set mare. I bought Adella from Mrs. Tamra Sisk in early December of 2011. We have only shown at a few shows accumulating our Youth Rom in our first show along with 55-60 points ranging from the novice classes to the open. I show in the All Around events primarily the Halter, Showmanship, Horsemanship, Trail, and we just added Western Riding to our list.

Q: Tell me about your experience at the Region 9 Show?

A: The Region 9 was my first regional show to ever compete at, but Adella was a veteran of these shows. We were able to win the Regional Novice Amateur Showmanship, Novice Amateur Trail, and Amateur Trail class along with winning the AQHA classes that ran concurrent with them. I was blown away that we not only walked away with just one buckle, but with three! My reason for attending the Region 9 was in hope of placing in the top 10 were I could qualify the easy way for the Novice World. I’m a trainer-less novice and I love it! My mom and aunt help me at shows, and, if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Q: What are your future career and horse show goals?

A: Right now I am attending The University of Southern Mississppi where I am majoring in Finance (Real Estate). My goals for this show year is to get our open Superior in Trail and to hopefully place well at the Novice World!

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

A: I would like to thank Judd Paul for putting the foundation on Adella as a two and three year-old and Jamie Watson who trained her for the All Around Events. Adella hasn’t had much professional training in about three years, and it’s a testimony to how well she was trained by these great trainers that she is still able to hold her own with the top dogs.

Q: Thanks for sharing your wins and background with us! Good luck at the Novice Championship Show.

A: Sure! No problem. Thanks for asking!
