Five years ago today, the horse show world lost one of its favorite sons, 19 year-old, Alex Blackwood. Many of us recall hearing of the tragic news while at the Congress. Steven Blackwood, Alex’s father, wrote a nice tribute to his son marking the fifth anniversary of his death. We wanted to share it with GoHorseShow.com readers and we encourage you to share your memories of Alex in the comments section or on the GoHorseShow.com facebook page.
Alex Steven Blackwood: July 26, 1989 – October 17, 2008
It’s been 5 years now since I have had one of your big hugs or heard you say “I love you ‘Pops'”. I cherish the memories and continue to hold on to the wonderful times we had together. You will never be forgotten son. You would be so pleased to know that the Alex Blackwood Foundation for HOPE has been instrumental in grass roots efforts which have brought about tremendous progress to save lives. The first “Camp Alex” event was an incredible success and you would be so pleased to see all the wonderful people who are getting involved to help us “Break the Silence” in pursuit of our mission to make “depression” a ‘common household word’. I am committed to saving lives through awareness and education that depression is treatable and suicide is preventable. A continuous pursuit to prevention in your honor and memory, my best friend and amazing son Alex Steven Blackwood. I love you.
