Closing Congress Champions Announced on Saturday

Congress judges agreed that Rusty Green had the best seat in the house aboard Bestseatnthehouse, winning the Three Year Old Open Western Pleasure Futurity. Green and his wife Katie own the mare. The win brought $8,786.04 to the Greens, and an additional $4,574.80 for winning the Southern Belle Breeders portion of the class.

“She just has such a big presence in the ring,” said Katie Green. “She’s pretty special.” So special, in fact, that the Greens plan to keep her – something that doesn’t usually happen in a training barn. “I don’t think she will ever leave our barn,” Katie Green said.

A Thursday Thurston at Congress
Tami Thurston wasn’t expecting to win the NSBA Two Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle Stakes on Thursday at the All American Quarter Horse Congress. “We won the Limited the other day, and I figured we had had our day,” she said.

However, Thurston came back to win the Open division of the class, sweeping both classes with her mount, Good Will Huntin. The duo bested a field of 24 horses in the finals.

“It was a little crowded out there,” she said. “But he was really good. I just love him. He’s what my ideal Hunter horse should be. He’s got that soft, sweepy stride, he’s beautiful and he has the legs to go with it. He’s just dynamic. You can’t help but notice him.”
Thurston had teamed up with trainer Shane Pope to work with the gelding, who is by Good I Will Be, and is known as Jimmy. The gelding is owned by Cathy Corrigan Frank, and earned $3,745.79 for the win.

Purcell’s Top Picks Highlight Wednesday at the Congress

For One Night Only swept all four two year old futurity classes by adding a championship in the Non-Pro Two Year Old Western Pleasure Stakes with Hillary Roberts in the saddle.  The pair had earlier won the Limited division of the class, while trainer Aaron Moses won the Limited division of the Two Year Old Open Western Pleasure Futurity as well.
“Hillary did an awesome job showing him,” said Moses of the gelding by Invitation Only. “That’s saying a lot because it’s just the third time she’s ridden him. Not every horse and rider can hit the ground running like that, but that’s how he is. He’s pretty easy to ride.”

Repeat Champions and New Congress Queen Highlight Sunday
A chilly but sunny day brought repeat Congress champions, a new Congress Queen and the culmination of the National Youth Activity Team Tournament on Sunday at the All American Quarter Horse Congress.
In the Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle Stakes Limited Division finals, Tami Thurston became a back-to-back winner of the class, this time aboard Good Will Huntin, whom she showed for Kathy Corrigan Frank. She won the same class in 2013 on Best In The Moonlite for owner Linda Jacobs.
“I was really not expecting to come back and win it again this year,” Thurston said. “I figured I had my turn last year. But I was fortunate to be able to come back with a really nice horse again this year.”
Thurston describes ‘Jimmy’ as a dynamic horse. “He’s so beautiful and he has the legs to go with it,” she said. “He’s a neat horse. I’ve got to work with him on and off this summer and just got to show him a handful of times. Shane Pope trained him, and it’s been a great partnership. We will be showing him in the three-year-old events next year. He has a bright future ahead.”
