UPDATE: Ona Good Cowboy Debuts in Congress Two Year-Old Masters

UPDATE: We would like to congratulate Randy Wilson and Ona Good Cowboy on placing fourth in the Master’s Two Year-Old Class. He looked great and we look forward to seeing him show at the AQHA World Show in the Two Year-Old Western Pleasure. Learn more about Ona Good Cowboy in the feature we wrote below.

Breeding is a very uncertain thing. Some breeders have a preference whether their mare produces a colt or filly and some even have a specific color preference. But in the end, most hope for a horse with both a good mind, sound conformation and great athleticism. Jan Pittman, and her husband Wes, hoped for all of those things when they bred their AQHA World and Congress Champion mare, Ona Good Impulse to one of the very hottest stallions today, RL Best of Sudden.

In a ironic twist of fate, the Pittmans, who own and operate The Pittman Ranch in Panama City, Florida, didn’t really know if they had produced the perfect cross until the 2013 Congress Super Sale.

As the story goes, Jan gave her long-time trainers Bret and Candy Parrish, an embryo out of her great mare out of appreciation for their success together. The resulting foal was a beautiful sorrel stud colt. Bret and Candy sold him as a yearling to Rick and Kelley Christy, who then put him in the Congress sale as a yearling.

“I was not there during the Congress Sale last year, but asked Stanley Scott to go look at him and he loved him,” Jan recalls. “I bought him over the phone and we partnered on him. Ironically, I ended up buying a horse I gave away as an egg as a Christmas present to Bret and Candy.”

“I had a really good feeling about this colt and wanted to partner with
Jan and Wes,” leading breeder, Stanley Scott said. “He is gorgeous with
great conformation and with his outstanding pedigree, he will make a
outstanding show horse and sire.”

Fast forward one year later to the 2014 Congress and the Pittman’s and Scott’s have high hopes for the two year old “Wes” as he is called (not to be confused with Jan’s husband, Wes).  He was given the registered name Ona Good Cowboy and he and Randy Wilson of Zanesville, Ohio will make their debut Saturday evening in the Two Year- Old Masters Western Pleasure class.

“When Stanley called and told me Randy was going to show Wes in the
Masters, I was so thrilled and knew the two were a perfect match,” Jan
said.”Wes is just getting better and better. He is freaky and deep hocked just like his mother, and he can trot and lope both ways and is drop dead gorgeous.”

Stanley Scott adds, “I’m a fan of the stud, RL Best of Sudden
as we’ve done really well with RL’s for quite some time breeding our
mares. Jan’s mare, the mother of Wes, is also a very nice horse. I have
believed in Wes all along to mature into the great pleasure horse that
he’s become today.”
Two-time Reserve Congress Masters Champion, Randy Wilson, got Wes in training following the NSBA World Championship Show. Doug Pratt of Ocala, Florida is credited in starting the beautiful stallion.

“I am very excited–this is the first year I’ve shown a stallion in the Masters,” Randy Wilson said. “It’s nice having the opportunity to show such a talented horse.”

High hopes for the young stallion shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Jan Pittman had a very impressive show record showing his dam, Ona Good Impulse. The pair is a four-time Congress
Champion, and two-time AQHA World Champion. Candy Parrish and the mare
also have a successful show record, being named Reserve Congress
Champions in the Junior Western Pleasure and placing top five at the
AQHA World Show.

“I have never had a horse that loves to show like One Good Impulse,” said Bret Parrish. She has a forever home with the Pittman’s and now is a happily
retired broodmare at the Pittman’s farm in Florida.

Don’t miss the duo showing in the Masters Event, a special maiden event that guarantees $50,000 to the champion with an estimated purse of $200,000, on Saturday, October 25. Also watch out for the duo showing at the AQHA World Show in the Two Year-Old Western Pleasure.
