Legendary Mare GoodyGoody Gumdrops Passes at 17

GoodyGoody Gumdrops, one of the industry's leading producers and famed Highpoint Performance Horses mares, passes at the age of 17. RIP, Goody.

We are sad to report the passing of the top-producing dam and one of the matriarch mares at Highpoint Performance Horses, GoodyGoody Gumdrops. The 2007 bay mare by Zippos Mr Goodbar and out of Jet Set Five was 17 years old.

Goody’s performing foals have won over 2,050 AQHA points and $125,000 in earnings. The crown jewel of her offspring is VS Goodride – the 2019 NSBA Horse of the Year and multiple World and Congress Champion. Other Congress Champion offspring include Lookin Good In Red, Red Label, Miss Goody Hoo Shoes, and HP Prime Time. Goody is also the grand-dam of Call Her Daddy and Blue Suede Shoos.

“Closing the chapter on Goody is tough for all of us at Highpoint,” Charlie Cole revealed. “Goody helped build Highpoint in Texas and put Jason (Martin) and me on the map as top show horse breeders.”

Jason Martin echoes Cole’s sentiments. “Goody was a very special mare to Charlie and me,” he told us. “We purchased her dam, Jet Set Five, when we lived in California because she was one of the last daughters of Hotrodders Jet Set. However, she was a wild feral mare we had to rope to catch when we purchased her. It took years to get her tamed,” Martin recalled.

According to Martin, the cross between Jet Set Five and Zippos Mr Goodbar was a magical one from the beginning. “Goody was special from the start as she was a freak of nature mover. She had so much hock, and her front leg was like a stick. She could have scored them if they had given plus two lead changes.”

Martin continues, “We bred her early on, and she would pass on her movement no matter who we bred her to. She produced Congress Champion after Congress Champion. She will go down in history as one of the industry’s best producers. We are excited to see her last few foals being born to carry on the winning tradition.”

Highpoint Breeding Manager Christi Christensen had a special bond with Goody as well. “I have been part of Goody’s life since she was born. She was special from the beginning….one of my favorite babies. It was easy to love her because she was so easygoing about everything. She grew up as a fun show horse to watch, excelling in the western pleasure and trail. Then, she was one of the great dams here at Highpoint. I was so excited when her first foal won the Congress…then another and another. Just shows how much a great mare can contribute.”

The mare spent some of last year at Christi’s ranch, spoiled by her seven-year-old granddaughter, Alexa. “Goody would knicker to her to come over and give her treats….she even had a Christmas wreath that we made hanging on her stall. Our family loved her and she was patient with that little girl while she learned to brush a horse, pick out her feet, and feed her treats. Goody would hang her head out her stall window, watch the ranch all day, and loved living the good life. It was a very sad day laying her to rest, and all of us will greatly miss her. Run free, Goody girl.”

On behalf of everyone at GoHorseShow, we extend our sincerest condolences for the loss of this industry icon. RIP, Goody.
