Working for Pinetree Quarter Horse for the past 18 years, Anthony Douglas of Lake Butler, Florida specializes in all-around horses and ranch horse events. Originally from Jacksboro, Tennessee, he received his B.A. In Agricultural Business and a minor in Education at Middle Tennessee State University. Douglas got involved with horses when his father passed away when he was nine. “My mother wanted to keep me busy with something that I loved. This road led to horses.”
GoHorseShow sat down with Anthony to find out more about his background and future goals.
GHS: Hi Anthony. When did you start showing horses?
Douglas: I started showing horses when I was 13 years old. I love competition. I am definitely a competitive person and riding one that I have trained and prepared is my ultimate reward.
GHS: What is your favorite win in the show arena?
Douglas: In 2011, when I won the Limited Trail AQHA Year End Award.
GHS: What are some of the horses you have worked with?
Douglas: One Hot Kat, One Hot Katwoman, The Krymsun Kat, Flashin Code Red, Huntin For Candy, Hot Mess In A Dress, Miss Kat Tails, and Hesa Taw Hancock.
GHS: Who are some of your best mentors?
Douglas: My mother, first of all, Steve Fowler, Andrew and Lori Augsburger, and Andrey Ferrier.
GHS: Do you have any advice for young trainers?
Douglas: I hope you are addicted to poverty because we do this for the love of the horse, not to get rich. I would have to say to a young person that wants to be a trainer, work hard, and do not bounce around from trainer to trainer because someone has hurt your feelings. Stick it out. Always be humble and have a backbone.
GHS: What are some of your favorite memories?
Douglas: After being here 18 years, there have been so many rewards it’s hard to count. My thoughts on this are, I may not know who won what class at the World or The Congress last year, but I sure can tell you some great memories that were made.
GHS: How did you end up working for Pinetree?
Douglas: A friend of mine told me that Pinetree and I would be a good match.
GHS: What is something someone may not know about you?
Douglas: That I love to cook!
GHS: What would you like to see changed about the industry?
Douglas: The return of the weekend horse show!
GHS: What are some of your future goals?
Douglas: To have a successful and prosperous show season.
GHS: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Douglas: This is a very rewarding industry if you play your cards right and have a great work ethic and a good attitude. Be flexible and be able to go with the flow of the day because it can change in a second and you never know what your day may bring.
GHS: Thanks, Anthony!
