Eating Your Way Through Congress

There is no better place to be in October than the All American Quarter Horse Congress. The Congress holds something for everyone with a variety of different disciplines all gathering in Columbus, Ohio to celebrate and enjoy the American Quarter Horse.

While you expect there to be talented horses, skilled riders and shopping galore, you may not expect to experience the broad array of food options available on the grounds. From indulgent treats to healthy fare, you can find something for every palate at the Congress. Calories can be quickly burned off with hours of shopping or practicing so…

We’ve tried multiple offerings across the entire fairgrounds all to put together a few of our favorites. It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it. We hope you enjoy eating your way through Congress with these recommendations.

Cinnamon/Pecan Roll at the Sweet Shop
(pictured above)

You can’t even consider it a trip to Congress a successful one without a cinnamon roll from the Sweet Shop. This delectable beauty comes in several varieties, including the traditional version with glaze and the pecan roll. We also noticed a red velvet version which is a fresh, new spin on a classic treat. The Sweet Shop has been a Congress staple for years and is open 24 hours.

Stromboli at Mowry’s

It comes in three different varieties, pepperoni and cheese, pepperoni and sausage and pepperoni, sausage, onions and green peppers. They are served piping hot and brushed with garlic butter. This handheld, warm, ooey-gooey pillow of dough, cheese and fillings hits the spot on a cold Columbus day.

Rutana’s Hot Apple Dumplings

The ultimate mix of hot and cold, the Hot Apple Dumplings at Rutana’s are the perfect dessert option for a blustery day at the Congress. As soon as the vanilla ice cream hits the hot apple dumplings, they melt together to make the perfect sweet treat. Rutana’s also offers old-fashioned root beer, cherry and orange creamsicle floats. No matter what your sweet tooth desires, it can be satisfied at this Congress staple.

Greek Salad at Niko’s Street Eats

Niko’s Street Eats is a Greek Style food truck that sells Gyros, Falafel and pitas but our favorite for a healthier option is their Greek Salad. Add some lean protein like grilled chicken and this salad will keep you feeling full without all the calories.

The options are endless, and there is a taste for every palette. From fried to fancy and everything in between, be sure to carve out some time to enjoy the eats around the fairgrounds at the All American Quarter Horse Congress.
