Hello from Tulsa and the beginning of a great NSBA World Show. I’m Amy Gumz of Gumz Farms and this is my favorite show of the year. I don’t get to leave the breeding farm often, so I’m usually very excited to spend a week in Tulsa – no matter how miserable the weather is.
This show looks to be absolutely huge without an extra stall on the grounds, so I’m hopeful that we will grab some great candids to share with everyone.
As with my team at the farm, I tend to surround myself with some great people at the show as well, so I’m hopeful that we have some great contributions from some of the horse show, “Gumz Girls”, in case I miss that special shot. Stay tuned for some great pictures throughout the show.
Picture #8 – Final Picture of the Day
Here is my final picture of the day from the NSBA World Show. A great ending to a great show. I really wanted my pictures to show more than the glitz and glamour of this major show. The people and human side of this show is second to none.
So once everything was winding down, I was able to see my Congress Master’s horse ride around. This show is a great one to get these youngsters acclimated to this crazy environment.
I’m pretty excited for “Callie” or “Why” if you ask Shane Dowdy what her name is. She’s one of the few babies from our test crop of now two year olds sired by Its A Southern Thing (Moonpie). Her name is Its A Pretty Thing, which is such a fitting name for her, and will be shown by Shane.
In typical Shane fashion, he ponied her over to me along the side of his Cadillac and rode her for me. So for me, a perfect ending to a fabulous show.

We don’t honor our veterans nearly enough but today the show stopped to honor our “Heroes on Horseback”. Dominic DeStefano and his stallion, I Got Em Talkin presented the riderless horse during the Heroes On Horses presentation for the NSBA Foundation. Adria Smith (pictured right) also generously donated a portion of her stallion, These Irons Are Hot, breeding fees to The NSBA Foundation Heroes on Horseback program. Then, industry professionals and exhibitors all came together to honor our veterans as they started their classes at the show. The volunteers and generosity of everyone involved was simply amazing.

The NSBA World Show represents new beginnings and welcoming new people into the industry. Today being sale day, we snapped a quick picture of Nancy Ellis of Indiana and Carra Eisenbies of South Carolina with one of the consigned yearlings. This is the first trip to the NSBA World Show for both of them. Nancy has consigned a filly by Lazy Loper to the sale and has not entered a horse in a public auction since 1998. Carra is an intern from Clemson University helping at the yearling sale.

This show represents family on so many levels. I love the support from August Darilek. He’s 90 years young and still a practicing dentist. He is at the NSBA World cheering on his family’s paint stallion, Vowed To Be Sensational and paint gelding, Good Bars Only.

I am loving the entrepreneurial spirit that is present at the NSBA World Show. Jayden McDonough gets the prize with his dog sitting, walking and grooming service. Note the details on his sign as he is giving 25% of his earnings to Children’s Hospital. This is what our industry is all about. Jayden’s proud parents are trainers, Keith McDonough and Mark Jensen from Washington State.

NSBA President Elect Bill Cosentino and his wife, Cindy, have spent their days spreading cheer, hospitality and welcome wishes to all the exhibitors. Cathrin Gutmann’s daughter, Mimi, who lives in Austria, loved the cookies that NSBA was handing out. I think the NSBA World Show is all about welcoming people to the industry and the show.

This picture warms my heart as Corbette Ryan pilots through the EWD Supportive Rider Walk Trot Trail. Along with a host of helpers, he did a great job with his horse, Lazy Lovin. They ended up Reserve Champions in their class! The joy on the faces of the EWD participants just glows. The EWD program is such a great addition to the NSBA World Show and enjoyed so much by participants, volunteers and spectators.

I love this picture of Meg Tierney working her fingers to bloody nubs. How can she stay so cheery? We all get so caught up in these major shows and sales that we forget all the people who help make it happen. Often working non-stop, our braiders and banders get our horses looking our best and ready for the next event. Thanks guys for all you do!
