A Day In The Life: Spot My Blue Boy

Chepota Farm located in Weatherford, Texas is the proud home to 11-time World Champion and National Champion Appaloosa stallion, Spot My Blue Boy. The loud colored bay leopard stallion was named 2012 World’s Best Appaloosa. In addition to “Domino,” owner Rebecca Hogan has produced numerous World, National, Reichert, BCF, and European Champions in her 14 years of breeding.

Domino is by the legendary quarter horse stallion, Skys Blue Boy. Domino retired from the show ring in 2012 with six World Championships, five National Championships and four Reserve World Championships. His offspring are continuing his winning tradition with several World and National titles of their own including: Lukin For Blue Spots, Coats N Blue Tails, The Blue Huntress, Missys Blue Girl, Details Gone Bluey, and Sweet Lukin Blues.

“Domino is one of the most trainable horses I have ever had,” says Lisa Ligon, who rode and showed him often during his show career. “He never wanted to do anything wrong. He tried his very best every single, time no matter how difficult the task.”

GoHorseShow sat down with Spot My Blue Boy’s owner, Rebecca Hogan, to talk about the talented Domino and found out the inside scoop on this striking Appaloosa stallion.

spot my blue boyHi Rebecca, please tell us how you ended up owning Spot My Blue Boy and how his barn name, “Domino” came about?

I bought Domino in 2009 when he was just two years-old and had about 10 rides on him. I had been looking at him and talking to Linda Monaco, his breeder, for over a year about him. I never dreamed I would own a stallion, but believed he was something special. It was a long process, but I gained a lifetime friend in Linda through it. Linda named him Domino after the game pieces that are white with black dots on them just like him. I gave him his registered name. I wanted his registered name to be more identifiable with Skys Blue Boy. With Linda’s blessing, I changed his first name to Spot My Blue Boy.

If you could describe him in one word, what would it be?

Gregarious. He loves people and the action in the barn.

What is his daily routine?

He eats breakfast, naps, waits his turn to be worked, and makes eyes at the ladies.

spot my blue boyDoes he have any funny or quirky habits?

Anytime you go to his stall, he presses the bone of his skull right up to the bars of his stall and peeks one eye out at you.

What treats does he like?

He loves peppermints and Dobbins Delights (Purina horse treats)

Do you have any memorable moments you would like to share about him?

My best memory of Domino is the day he won the World Championship in Junior Hunter Under Saddle on the same day that his sire, Skys Blue Boy, passed. I can’t help but believe that Blue was looking down on his son that day.

If he could say one thing, what would it be?

“It’s my turn, it’s my turn, me, me, me, I want to go next!” He just loves to work.

spotmyblueboy3What is his strongest trait that he has passed onto his offspring?

His exceptional length of stride at the trot and a lot of self-carriage at the canter (The Blue Huntress pictured right – 2013 BCF Champion Hunter Longe Line, National Champion Hunter In Hand)

What did you think when you first set sight on him in the show arena?

I really didn’t know what to think. I was so new at it. I do know I was blown away.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I get so nervous at horse shows that my trainer asks me to leave the stalls. Now, I just disappear before she asks.

spot my blue boyWhat do you think sets him apart from any other horse you’ve known?

He’s so trainable! His trainer, Lisa Ligon says, “You could teach that horse to drive a car.”

How do most people react to his loud color? Does he throw a lot of color on his babies?

People either love it or leave it. Luckily, he throws babies for both camps. (2015 foal, All About The Blue, pictured left)

Anything else you would like to add?

Domino is a sweet little pocket pet. You can lie next to him in his stall while he takes a nap. He just loves people!

Thank you Rebecca!

Anytime!
