A few days ago, GoHorseShow had the amazing opportunity to tour Masterson Farms in Somerville, Tennessee. While there, we were able to visit with Ken Masterson and all of the people who make up the Masterson Farms team, as well as see the stunning AQHA World and Congress Champion sire RL Best Of Sudden and several of his foals. The gorgeous farm is located in the rolling Tennessee hills approximately one hour from Memphis. Ken and wife Marilyn have been fortunate to call this amazing property home since 2007 and it is comprised of 550 acres, multiple barns, arenas, and pastures full of about 200 head of horses including broodmares, 25 yearlings and over 30 weanlings.
Over the years, the Mastersons have developed an excellent reputation of providing impeccable customer service to their clients largely due to surrounding themselves with high quality staff. “I want everyone to feel that when they deal with us and the farm that they are treated well, correctly, and dealt with honestly,” says Ken Masterson, who has taken many of the business principles he learned as the General Counsel for FedEx for 25 years and applied them to his breeding business.
“Many people in the industry are concerned and uncertain about whether they will be receiving a quality product for their investment,” Masterson told us. “We work really hard to provide excellent service, and I believe we have been able to provide a quality experience whether it is in the breeding arena or when buying a prospect.”
GoHorseShow would like to thank Ken Masterson and his team for taking the time to show us around. We walked around the property and took several photos to share with our readers. View the slideshow below!
Earlier this year, Masterson Farms announced that they will limit the number of outside mares bred to RL Best Of Sudden during the 2016 season to 40. The breeding fee will be $5,000.
Ken Masterson discussed the reasons for limiting the book and noted, “RL Best Of Sudden will be 14 years of age this next season. Thanks to the customers who have believed so strongly in his offspring. He has had remarkable success as a sire of not only western pleasure horses, but as well World Champions in everything from western riding to trail and performance halter.”
“Early in his career, RL Best Of Sudden sustained an injury to his stifle which does not currently limit his ability as a sire. However, if we continue to breed him to the current high number of mares, that injury will worsen and could eventually affect him as a sire. We want to do everything we can to protect him and his breeding career, and think substantially reducing his book of mares at this point is an important step in that direction.”
