There were plenty of titles to go around on Saturday at the Tom Powers Triple Challenge Futurity, but Jay Starnes took home the biggest check of the day. Starnes piloted Lazy Illusion to win the $25,000 first place check for Katherine Tobin in the Triple Challenge Maiden Two Year Old Sale Stakes Open Western Pleasure.
An overnight thunderstorm made the outdoor arena a bit messy for exhibitors, but they made the most of it.
The bay stallion by Lazy Loper is out of Certain Illusion, by Certain Potential. “He’s just a really nice horse,” Starnes said. “He’s very steady. He trots and he lopes really well, and he’s just great minded. He was easy from the very beginning and just wanted to train up so well when we started him.”
Starnes plans to campaign Lazy Illusion at the NSBA World Championship Show and the Congress Two Year Old Western Pleasure Futurity.

Tom Powers Report #2
Friday, June 26, 2015
A few more sprinkles fell during the second day of the Tom Powers Triple Challenge futurity, but the show went on and horse owners Patty Roberts and Julie and Justin Voge saw multiple wins during the 35th annual show.
Winning the last class of the day was Cole Baker and Consider Me Best, showing for Jean Brooks, earning the trophy in the Maturity $2,500 Limited Horse Western Pleasure. “I just got her a couple of months ago to show in the Green Western Pleasure classes,” Baker said.
“She had never been shown, but she’s really even keel – the same every day. She’s turning into a really nice show horse.” Baker will campaign the five year old mare, who is by RL Best Of Sudden, in Maturity Limited Western Pleasure, Green Western Pleasure and Junior Western Pleasure events this year.

Tom Powers Report #1
Thursday, June 25, 2015
The 2015 Tom Powers Triple Challenge Futurity got underway on Thursday under cloudy skies and a few sprinkles of rain, but the weather didn’t dampen the spirits of exhibitors who helped usher in the 35th anniversary of the storied futurity show.
Alexandra Chavez was the biggest winner of the show’s first day, with her horses winning three futurity classes. Chavez was in the saddle to earn two Non-Pro titles, including winning the Maturity Limited Rider Western Pleasure on Hot Lopin Goodbar and the Non-Pro Color Breed Western Pleasure on A Chrome Cookie.
“Rocky is my painted pony,” Chavez said of A Chrome Cookie, pictured below with Troy Lehn. “He’s just so consistent, and he does his job. Troy (Lehn) also does the Trail with him, so it breaks things up for him. I think it makes it easier to come back and do Western Pleasure.”
Lehn also piloted A Chrome Cookie to win the Novice Horse Novice Rider Maturity Western Pleasure for Chavez. “He’s just so easy to show and work with,” Lehn said. “He’s making a great all around horse for Alex, and he’s a lot of fun to show.”
