One Lazy Investment Wins Back-to-Back Congress Championships

There is no doubt there is a special connection between Kenny Lakins and One Lazy Investment. Last night, this team won the Senior Western Pleasure making it an impressive two years in a row. Lakins and Lazy had a dominating performance with two firsts, a second and a third in deep competition full of multiple Congress and World Champions.

“He just keeps getting better and better,” Kenny Lakins told GoHorseShow right after his win. Earlier in his career, Lakins and this talented bay gelding also took home the 2012 AQHA Reserve World Championship in the Senior Western Pleasure and the 2011 AQHA World Championship in the Junior Western Pleasure. “He is eight years-old now but it is not often that I can say that a horse is getting better over time, especially in the pleasure,” Kenny says.

Lakins continues, “I knew in the first split that he was on and that he was going to do really well. He was relaxed in his head and neck and was ready. He is the type of horse that you can’t show fresh–you have to take the edge off and get him to relax. He also loves the Celeste Arena which really showed last night.”

Kenny says that he knew Lazy was special when he broke him out as a two year-old. “He always had a soft flowing way about him with a lot of natural cadence and he has been that way from the first time I rode him. We have always clicked and he is one of those once-in-a-lifetime horses that I have been honored to ride and show.”

Lazy’s Owner, Peek Owen says that the gorgeous bay gelding is one-of-a-kind. “He is so pretty and there is not very much out there that can touch him when he is on fire. I think he is the best he has ever been and I think it is amazing that they were able to do it two years in a row.”

When we asked Kenny if he thought he won it, he humbly remarked, “I had a little bit of hope that we would win it again, and I hoped the judges would see it that way and luckily they did. I’m just glad we had a good go and if we were second, third, or tenth, I would still have been happy because we can’t control what the judges think and decide.”

Peek’s daughter, Virginia, is just off receiving the bronze trophy at the AQHYA World Show with Lazy in the western pleasure and this duo was also NSBA Reserve World Champions int the Youth 14-18 Western Pleasure earlier this year. We talked to Virginia after she watched Lazy show on the Live Feed.

“It was a little crazy because I had the live feed on my phone and laptop and it kept skipping but they were actually showing the class at different times so I actually got to watch him show twice,” Virginia says and laughs. “I thought he looked great and it looked like he was having fun showing off to the crowd.”

We asked Virginia if she was nervous showing him next week– “Of course I’m nervous because it is the Congress but really more excited to be able to ride him, especially when he is on his game.”

In 2012, Virginia and Lazy were the unanimous Congress winners in the 12-14 Western Pleasure, and this year the duo will be showing in the 15-18 Youth Western Pleasure on Tuesday and we wish them the best of luck. Hopefully, the team will add another Congress win to Lazy’s already legendary show career.
