Our cover girl this month, Kirsten Thomsen of Nicolaus, California, is one lucky girl. The twenty one year-old purchased Elis A Sleepin (Eli) in January of 2012, just shortly after he was crowned the 2011 AQHA World Champion in Junior Western Riding with Leonard Berryhill. The big, black gelding is by BSB Quarter Horses’ stallion, Too Sleepy To Zip and out of Vested Investment.
What makes Eli stand out is not only his gorgeous presence, but his diverse talent. Eli has amassed points in Western Pleasure, Western Riding, Horsemanship, Hunter Under Saddle, Equitation, Trail and Performance Halter Geldings.
“Eli is just a big goofball,” says Kirsten, who is showing Eli for the second straight year in the Amateur All-Around events. “When you call his name, he whips around with his big ears up and he is happy to see you. He is just a happy and kindhearted horse.”
Thomsen speaks highly of her trainer, Nancy Renfro, who is a 23-time AQHA World and Reserve World Champion in eight different events. “She is just an awesome trainer and I’m glad to be working with her.”
Renfro also shows Thomsen’s other horse, Nothin Compares (Hollywood) in Junior Western Pleasure, Trail and Western Riding. The 2008 brown gelding is by Invitation Only and out of Goodbars Glamourgirl. Last year, Hollywood placed in the Top 10 at the AQHA World Show in Junior Western Riding.
“Hollywood has been one of the easiest horses to train and teach the all around,” Nancy says. “He has natural talent and is great minded and beautiful. I look forward to riding him every day.”
