Mary Gracen Reed: It’s A Southern Thing

“As southern as sweet tea” is how friend, Sarah Elder Chabot describes fourteen year-old, Mary Gracen Reed of Batesville, Mississippi. Her trainer, Karen Evans Mundy also gives everyone a tip about what to call this polite girl with a thick southern accent. “Well first of all…..never call her Mary. It’s a southern thing…..it is Mary Gracen or we call her MG for short.”
Mundy adds, “She is just the sweetest most respectful kid I have ever been around. She and her mom never say yes or no, it is always, ‘Yes Ma’am’ or ‘No Ma’am’. They are a breath of fresh air in this world where kids don’t have much respect for their elders.”

This newcomer to the AQHA show circuit is showing two horses this year–Shake N Tail, (Sophie), a three year-old mare in the hunter under saddle and performance halter mares, and veteran, Ask Me For Details, (Houston) in the youth all-around events.

MG has moved up into the 14-18 division this year which is much tougher, but she is showing that she can certainly compete with the older kids. “She is a great rider and has come leaps and bounds in the two years I have been training her,” Mundy says. “She has so much natural feel and talent on a horse.”

Reed is looking forward to showing at the AQHYA World Show in the hunter under saddle with Sophie and the showmanship, equitation, and horsemanship with Houston. “Showing horses is my life,” says Mary, who started showing in 4-H when she was eight years-old. “That is what I love to do. My goal is to be amazing, and I would rather ride my horse than hang out with friends.”

Reed describes Houston as a sweetheart, and says that he always tries his best. Sophie, on the other hand, is characterized as “a little diva.”

“Houston is always Mr. Reliable, but Sophie is a little sassy. I consider her a princess. She is also goofy and klutzy and crosses her legs when she stretches and gets them wet,” MG says and laughs.

According to Reed, her ultimate goal would be to win an AQHYA World Championship and win at the Congress.

“MG certainly has everything it takes to be a World Champion,” says Mundy, who is no stranger to the winner’s circle herself. “I call her my little Rock Star and I also say she is a ‘Mini Me’ because she loves riding and showing her horses and will work as hard as I push her and never complains or makes excuses which I think is critical for a trait in someone that wants to and will be a champion.”

GoHorseShow wishes Mary Gracen Reed good luck at the AQHYA World Show and Congress!
