The Southern Ohio Quarter Horse Association Winter Circuit was held this past weekend in Wilmington, Ohio at Roberts Arena. It was a four day show that was AQHA, NSBA, SOQHA, and OQHA approved and had a flat rate of $400 per horse. The judges for the show were Kelly McDowall, Clint Fullerton, Mike Weaver, Jon Barry, John Boxell, and Rusty Green.
“The SOQHA Winter Circuit did not hold true to name–there was great weather with the Three Year-Old and Over Novice Horse Western Pleasure slot class being held outside on Saturday,” says amateur competitor, Chelsea Martz. “On Sunday, the Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny brought treats for all the children. There were great numbers as well as lots of fun exhibitor parties and exciting prizes.”
According to SOQHA President Judd Paul, the show awarded over $60,000 in cash and prizes and there was a total of 5700 entries over the four day show. GoHorseShow was also a major sponsor donating 20 GoMag certificates that were given as random drawings for class winners and placers.
The premier event at the show was the Three Year-Old and Over Novice Horse Western Pleasure Slot Class which was won by Brian Cox showing, The Best Martini (Martin). The duo received a check for $15,000, and the entire class paid out a total purse of $38,500. The Best Martini is by RL Best of Sudden who is proudly owned by Rhonda Malone of Orange, California.
“I cannot express into words how happy I am about Martin’s win–he was a rock star!” says owner, Rhonda Malone. “I could hardly contain myself, and I was just so happy that Martin looked so good. It also helped that the judges saw it the same way. I have been blessed with a wonderful horse and a great friend and trainer in Brian Cox.” (Photo © Eric Hardesty)
There were several fun events that took place during the show including the exhibitors’ dinner sponsored by Extremely Hot Chips on Friday night along with the SOQHA 2012 Year End Banquet awards; a Saturday night pizza party; an Easter egg hunt on Sunday morning; and the debut of one of the first Ranch Pleasure classes in this area.
“The atmosphere was great, and I think everyone enjoyed the show,” Judd told GoHorseShow. “Roberts Arena had everything ready when we arrived and the slot owners were excited that we were able to show the slot class outside in the gorgeous weather. We would like to thank all our sponsors because without their support the show would not have been a success.”
