Congratulations to Jay Starnes riding Zip By Machine on winning the $15,000 added Hylton Maiden Three-Year Old Western Pleasure at the Virginia Classic on Saturday, April 13th. The 2010 bay stallion is by A Good Machine and out of Zip Zipa Rageous. The total payout for the event totaled $38,960. This premier event of the show paid the winner $15,000, plus, there was a large payout of placings from first to sixth. Also, the majority of the $1500 entry fee was paid back into the purse.
This was back-to-back wins for owner Ray Burkhart of Knoxville, Tennessee who won the class last year with his mare, Zippin Hot Machine (Gertie) who is by A Good Machine and out of Shes A Deuce Coupe. Starnes and his mount, Zip By Machine, had a first, two seconds, and a fifth to come out on top. Starnes also received a pie in the face from the Virginia youth for winning the class. (pictured below)
There were a total of 14 horses who competed in the class, and the judges for the class were Pierre Brierre, Andrea Simmons, Randy Alderson, and Tanya Green–who was the tie-breaker judge. The horses showed to a pretty packed house of people watching the class. Trainer, Kristy Starnes, who won the event last year was the lone woman in the class competing against all men. Jeff Long’s entry, Chip N Along, was really steady for a youngster, and Pat Heeley debuting The Bourne Legacy really showed off his horse with his impeccable riding style. Mark Katafiaz, trainers for Stanley and Susan Scott, showed the only paint in the class, Cool Hotrod. According to many reports, Jay Starnes and his mount stood out in the tough class.
For several years, maiden three year-old pleasure events have been championed by breeder and huge supporter, Cecilia Hylton of Gainesville, Virginia due to her belief that the pleasure futurity horses should wait until they are three years-old to compete for their own physical and mental maturity. In order to compete in this class, the green three years-olds are not allowed to show at any other event before their debut in the Hylton Maiden.
