GoHorseShow would like to congratulate eight year-old Alexa Black of North Carolina on winning the tough Small Fry Horsemanship at the Congress. Her mount, One Hot Rainy Night (Breezy) and Black took home the coveted Congress bronze trophy, a Blue Ribbon Saddle, and Phil Harris headstall. Black in her gorgeous royal blue outfit and Breezy beat out over 50 exhibitors in the Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
“It was awesome to win my first Congress Championship,” Alexa told GoHorseShow right after her win. “This is my third time to try and win at the Congress, and we finally did it.”
The Coliseum was packed with gorgeous girls and boys dressed to win in their sparkly outfits and starched shirts vying for a piece of Congress History. There were six cuts and a finals with 24 exhibitors trying to get the attention of the judges in the middle of the pen. GoHorseShow was impressed by the the quality of young riders competing in the class.
Black had two firsts, a fifth, and a ninth to come out on top. Alexa Black is the daughter of horse trainer, Wade Black, who shows the great stallion Extremely Hot Chips. The third grader and honor roll student was happy with her ride.
“My horse did pretty well, and I was happy because she was really good like she is most of the time,” says Alexa, who says she loves everything about showing horses. “I enjoy having fun and dressing up in sparkly outfits.”
Black says she wants to be a fashion designer, horse trainer, and professional dancer when she grows up. Her proud grandmother, Joy Stewart, says that Alexa loves to design horse clothes including boots, chaps, and show shirts.
“She loves anything to do with fashion, horses and dancing,” Stewart says. “During the winter she shows her contest pony and has a lot of fun just being around the horses.”
Alexa says that her horse Breezy always whinnies at her when she comes and visits because she thinks she gets to go outside and run in the pasture.
In honor of Pink Day at the Congress, Alexa says that she plans on growing her hair really long and donating it to Locks of Love.
“My father and mother have a close friend that has cancer, and I am doing it in their honor. Hopefully a young girl can use my hair when she is going through cancer treatments,” Black says. “It was an amazing day, and I would like to thank all my family and friends that came out to support me and watch me show. It has been a perfect day.”
