Thirty-one year old Novice Amateur, Ashley Enoch-Scott of Tampa, Florida impressed everyone when she and her mount, Nota Moment Too Soon (Faith), were unanimous Novice Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation winners at the Region 10 Championships. What was so admirable about this win was that the 16.2 hand bay mare is a three year-old, and it was Ashley and Faith’s second time to ever show in the class. They were also circuit champions in the equitation at their first show.
“She has been so much fun because even though she is three–she acts so much more mature. Anything you throw at her, she takes it head on and never gets rattled,” says, Enoch-Scott. who grew up showing on the arab and pinto circuits until she moved to quarter horses in college. “I can practice a pattern over and over until I feel comfortable with it. Her temperament has carried over into horsemanship, trail, and showmanship. I always get worried that we are pushing too much at once, but she has yet to show us that she can’t handle it.”
Nota Moment Too Soon is by Do You Have A Minute and out of a mare by The Coosanova. Ashley had been looking for an all-around horse when Wayne Davis found this mare for Ashley.
“She has a really quirky personality but she loves people and you can kind of mess around with anything on her and she doesn’t care. She sleeps a lot too, especially at shows,” says, Ashley, who is currently under the guidance of Ann Turner. “My trainer has done a great job with Faith and getting her ready for me.”
The duo is excited to be showing in the all-around events at the East Coast Novice Championship Show in a few weeks.
“I am excited and nervous!” reveals Ashley, who received her Master’s in Education and is now in her second year as a Kindergarten teacher. “I am excited because I get to be part of the very first Novice Championships. I am nervous because I don’t have a whole ton of shows under my belt with this mare–even though I know she is way more mature than any seasoned horse I have ever showed. I am also nervous because this is only the second show that I have done trail and horsemanship. My mare has been riding really great so she helps me keep my heading up and working really hard to be the best that I can be.”
In the future, Ashley said she would also like to get her mare solid enough in the All-Around events in order to qualify for the Amateur World Show. In her professional career, she wants to continue teaching and to live up to her lineage–her mother, father, grandmother, and cousin are all teachers. “I want to be able to have an impact on students lives just like they do,” Ashley says.
Enoch-Scott would like to thank Rob and Mary Meneeley, Dawn Lovern, Wayne and Judy Davis, and Ann Turner for all their help furthering her show career. Lastly, she would like to thank her husband, Winfield Scott, for standing by her and being her cheerleader in the stands even though he knows nothing about horses. “He pushes me to do things that I don’t think I have the confidence to do.”
