AQHA started
a division for amateur riders age 50 and over in 1997. That division ultimately
became known as Select. And with 10,000 people in the United States turning 50
years old every day, it’s no wonder that Select is the fastest-growing segment
of AQHA’s membership!
In 2003, AQHA launched a new world championship event exclusively for amateur
exhibitors 50 and older. Known as the Select World Championship Show, that
inaugural year saw 307 entries for the entire show. This year, that figure
ballooned by more than 300 hundred percent, with 1,273 entries vying for more
than 43 coveted world champion titles and more than $500,000 in cash and
awards!
At the 2012 Adequan Select World Barn Party on Wednesday, August 29,
AQHA honored the exhibitors who have shown at every year of the
Select World. There are 19 exhibitors who have exhibited at all 10 Select
World Shows. An additional four exhibitors have attended every Select World
Show since halter was added in 2004. Michael Gaughan’s South Point Arena and
Equestrian Center sponsored the Barn Party event.
All
of these exhibitors’ names were also put into a drawing for a 100X
Shorty’s Caboy Hat, and Katherine Tobin of Scottsdale, Arizona, won the hat.
