Charlie Cole said that roan stallion, VS Code Red (Waylon), performed a flawless pattern Tuesday night in his unanimous Congress win in the Junior Western Riding. This was Waylon’s first time showing in Western Riding at the Congress. He followed it up with a win in Green Western Riding as well.
“It was definitely a little hectic and stressful since I was showing three horses in the class and the other two were a lot greener,” Cole said when he talked to GoHorseShow right after the win. “Waylon was 34th to go and the last of my horses I had to ride, but he was brilliant and I couldn’t have asked for a better ride. I was definitely exhausted at the end of the class!”
Cole adds, “I wish I could have shown Waylon first because he is so easy, but I just hopped on and did a few lead changes and loped the log and went in. He doesn’t take much preparation. We usually just lunge him for about fifteen minutes and ride him for about 30 minutes and that is about all he can take because he doesn’t have that much energy.”
VS Code Red’s owner, Kristen Galyean’s decision to send Waylon to Charlie Cole and Jason Martin to learn the western riding was obviously a smart move, and he is living up to his potential. “I was so nervous watching him tonight but he was perfect, and Charlie did a great job,” Kristen Galyean told GoHorseShow right after the class.
The four Congress judges in the Junior Western Riding were Russ Smith, Bob Kail, Kim Myers and Sandy Jirkovsky. They agreed that he was near perfect – Waylon won the tough class under all four judges.
“We are so very proud of him. He is filling his mother’s shoes just as we had hoped he would. He has such much lift and natural ability everything is just so easy for him. That is his mother in him–just so happy to please. We love our Waylon!”
Charlie Cole agrees, “Waylon is just like his mother (Vital Signs Are Good). So laid back and the best-minded stud. He never even looks up at the broodmares in the pasture at our farm. He can be collected and bred to several mares and then I can ride him right after and he never changes his demeanor. He is just an amazing and talented horse. My main challenge is to not get him too tired which is a good problem to have.”
