At the end of June, Cutting Trainer Jim McDonough from Culpeper, VA was severely injured when a horse fell with him. This injury will keep him from actively training for some time.

A lifelong horseman, McDonough doesn’t recall a time when horses weren’t part of his life. Over the years, McDonough has tried his hand at a variety of disciplines including jumpers, western pleasure, reining and more.

Fast forward seven years and McDonough is skilled at both riding and training cutting horses. He competes in the NCHA, AQHA and APHA Circuits, including the All American Quarter Horse Congress, World Quarter Horse Show, Fort Worth Futurity for three year olds and the Area Work-off which, is the original name for the NCHA’s National Championship Show.

However, the road from start up to success wasn’t an easy one for McDonough. “Cutting is a hard sport to get started in,” expresses McDonough. “Those first few years there were lots of downs and not many ups.” Although he had to struggle to advance and succeed McDonough learned new skills each step of the way. According to McDonough, “The first few years I didn’t win a dime.” As his style and technique improved he began coming home with some pocket change and more. In 2010 Jim placed top 5 at the NCHA’s Eastern National Championship Show and had 3 Top Tens and 2 Top Fives at the Congress.

Jim also spends a lot of his time giving back, working with the Marine Wounded Warrior Program out of Quantico, VA. Most recently and prior to his injury, a clinic and competition was scheduled for the soldiers at Don York’s D and M Cattle Company in late July. With his leg in a cast and unable to ride, Jim made sure he could manage the clinic and competition for the soldiers. The event was a great success.
