Story & Photo by Tonya Ratliff-Garrison | Paint Horse Journal | June 25, 2011
With 51 entries in the Novice Youth Showmanship preliminaries the morning of June 25, Johanna Proefrock of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, and her 14-year-old sorrel overo gelding Fleetstreet Max were one of 18 to make it back to the afternoon finals. “Max” is no stranger to APHA World Shows but it was only the second for 16-year-old Johanna. The pair was first in the draw for the finals and quietly stood on the rail as the next 17 completed their pattern. Then as each of the five judges lined up their choices, Johanna and Max were at the top of the line twice, second twice and in the seventh hole once. The placings gave Johanna her first world championship and Max his 22nd. The Paint Horse Journal caught up with Johanna at the Born 2 Be Show Horses stalls, the home-away-from-home for trainers Alisa Bernhard and Erica Lang and their clients.
