A Scenic Impulse Sires Back to Back Winners of the 2 Year-Old Color Classic

Top APHA stallion, A Scenic Impulse, was purchased by Darol Rodrock from the MacDonald/Hachtel Partnership a few months ago. Rodrock wanted to add a top quality paint pleasure stallion to his already incredible selection of breeding stallions. It appears to have been a very smart move on the part of this top pleasure horse breeder.

A Scenic Impulse was the Reichert Celebration Champion of the $90,000 Color Classic in 2004, and he is already the sire of back to back champions of the 2 Year Old Color Classic. Friday night, A Scenic Cheerleader, ridden by Mike Hatchel won this Premier Signature Class, and last year, Hatchel showed A Scenic Ocean Drive, to win this prestigious class. In 2010 Scenic Ocean Drive, returned to the Reichert to win the 3 Year Old Open Color Class and was also Reserve in the 3 Year-old Non Pro Color Class.

Amy Gumz of Gumz Farms helped put together the deal of Rodrock buying this stallion. “His babies have just had an amazing Reichert. The 2 year-olds that have won the Color Classic back to back are out of mares with two totally different bloodlines,” Gumz said. “This stallion is stunning to look at, but he is also the gentlest stud I have ever been around. He seems to be passing off his great disposition to his offspring. I can’t say enough about his temperament–even with the mares that are bred to him that are high strung–his quiet attitude seems to be passed down to his foals.”

Gumz explained that a few years ago Darol expressed an interest in adding a Paint stallion to his group. “We looked at a few horses but nothing materialized. Then, in conversations with Dave MacDonald and Mike Hachtel, we found out that A Scenic Impulse might be available for purchase,” Gumz said. “We had heard really good things about the horse. It was a long process because the Hachtel’s weren’t crazy about parting with him. He has been a big part of their family for a long time,” Gumz explained. “It took us several weeks, but we finally came to an agreement.”

Gumz added, “We’ve looked at an awful lot of Paint stallions, a lot of stallions in general and A Scenic Impulse combines the qualities that we expect with color. His babies have been really strong, very good in their front leg and an awful lot of pretty.” Additionally, Gumz said ” I’m really blown away by the color percentage on this horse. Mike Hachtel says he’s been running 85% color. He’s not homozygous and that’s way above what the average should be. His lowest percentage was 70% which is exceptional color.”

Rodrock is already beginning to knock around some ideas how this horse can be part of the Ride To Riches program which will offer some very strong incentives to the breeders and owners of his offspring. Darol says he will be offering strong promotions that we haven’t seen in the Paint industry.

Gumz Farms located in Morgantown, Kentucky will stand, Scenic Impulse, for the 2011 Breeding Season along with Rodrock’s other stallions, Only In the Moonlite, and Certain Potential.

Karen and Darol Rodrock have been breeding, raising, and exhibiting the American Quarter Horse for over 30 years. The Rodrock’s know pleasure horses, and they are aware that these three stallions offer a tremendous breeding opportunity to many mare owners in the industry.

Rodrock said he is excited to see A Scenic Impulse babies go to the next level. Darol is looking into the possibility of breeding some of his exceptional Quarter horse broodmares to this stallion. “We’re already talking about doing embryos on Cool Lookin Lady and Dotevita,” Rodrock said. “These mares will help add more high quality bloodlines to the paint industry. I’m looking forward to see more amazing offspring from this stallion for years to come.”
