The first of two premier events hosted annually by the American Paint Horse Association (APHA), the Summer World Championship Paint Horse Show is a showcase for Paint Horse competition. This year’s Summer World Show runs June 23-July 3, 2010 in Fort Worth, Texas, at Will Rogers Memorial Center.
Paige Stawicki, currently the Number One 14-18 exhibitor from Argyle, Texas, is our Youth Correspondent responsible for the great candids. Paige sent in this report:
As the youth portion of the world show comes
to a close, hi-point winners in each category are recognized. Walk-Trot winner
Rebekah Klenke aboard I’m in Heaven claim their first all around title at this
show. Other hi-point winners including novice youth hi-point Brianna
Slager with Ton of Trouble, 13 &
under hi-point Drew Rogers with Shez Eye Candy, and 14-18 all around Taylor
Prince with One Flashy Sensation shared the same success and excitement at the
awards presentation this afternoon.
Many
noticed at last year’s Amateur/Open show that the versatility class has been
brought back to the Paint World Show. This is a specialty class held at the end
of the show that requires riders to participate in a Hunter Under Saddle class,
a Western Pleasure class, the Barrels, and a Reining class. Each contestant
must remain in the arena at all times, and “grooms” are welcome into the pen in
order to help with tack changes.
This
class really stresses the all-around abilities within each horse. With only a
few minutes to prepare for the next class, the riders and horses prove how
compatible they are with each other along with how capable they are from going
from one discipline to the next. Before
this class was taken off the schedule, former youth competitors claimed that it
was one of the most exciting and popular classes at the show.
Only
8 entries will compete in the versatility class at this year’s Youth World, but
competitors say they hope to see it grow into the class it once was. Overall
the show was considered to be a success. Numbers stayed up, competition
remained tough, and at the end of the day everyone had fun. It’s always great
getting to reunite with cross-country friends, but as the show finishes
up, we begin our “good-byes” until next year.
Paige’s first installment:
Overall the show has been fantastic! Although still harmed by the decision to split the youth show from the amateur/open, numbers are up from last year. The show began with the showmanship classes. Madison Malch, the 2009 #1 13 & under exhibitor, took home the world title in the 13 & under division and 14-18 World Champion, Leroy Poignant, claimed his first AJPHA world buckle in the showmanship along with the Reserve World Champion, Ashley Huntington.
The English events were next as the atmosphere intensified. Groups began “claiming their spots” in the stands as they watched the Friday’s Hunter Under Saddle classes and Saturday’s Equitation classes. Taylor Dixon, a first time AJPHA World Show attendee, just about swept the 14-18 Hunter Under Saddle with 4 firsts aboard Done Up Fancy. Anne-Marie Fortenberry and Sterling Captive claimed their second world title in the 13 & under Hunter Under Saddle.
Another rider proving to be just as competitive as last year is Jamie Sutton and Imslightlyoverdressed, taking home the 14-18 Equitation World Championship buckle for the second year in a row. That’s not all the John Justin had to offer, however, fun classes including the dog races, the “See it in Color” Calcutta class, and the team tournament golf cart decorating contest were among a few of the great events keeping the arena alive.
