Good Cowboy Margarita Named NSBA Horse of 2009

“Who the heck is THAT?” Brian Baker heard that a lot when Good Cowboy Margarita first hit the show scene. People were compelled to find out more about this young stallion not only because of his movie star good looks but also because of his effortless way of moving. He epitomizes the ideal, natural western pleasure horse that NSBA and AQHA enthusiasts are drawn to.

His talents have paid off in the show ring racking up a long list of prestigious wins with his latest at the 2009 AQHA World Show placing Reserve in Amateur Western Pleasure and fourth in Junior Western Pleasure against the toughest horses in the industry. A great accomplishment in itself for a three year old stallion but it doesn’t end there. Not only has he won at the major shows throughout the year, but he also finished up 2009 with several year end high point titles. In AQHA he is High Point in the Nation in Junior Western Pleasure, High Point Stallion in the Nation All-Ages Western Pleasure and Reserve High Point in the Nation in Amateur Western Pleasure. In NSBA he is Year End High Point in the Nation in Three Year Old Intermediate Open Western Pleasure, Dual Approved Amateur Western Pleasure and Three Year Old Intermediate Non-Pro Western Pleasure. He’s also NSBA Year End Reserve High Point in the Nation in Dual Approved Junior Western Pleasure, Three Year Old Non-Pro Open Western Pleasure and Three Year Old Limited Non-Pro Western Pleasure. This is a horse that loves to show! Combine this with his heritage and he’s truly an awesome individual.

Cowboy’s pedigree is deeply rooted within the pleasure horse industry. His NSBA Hall of Fame sire, Zippos Mr Good Bar, needs no introduction. His dam, One Potent Margarita, is by Potential Investment out of Scotch Margarita, one of the winningest mares in AQHA history with over 2,000 points and seven World and Congress Championships. She’s sired by NSBA and AQHA Hall of Fame sire Scotch Bar Time.

When Brian and Dawn Baker first saw Cowboy as a yearling at Richland Ranch, they knew they couldn’t leave without him. From then on everyone that saw him wanted him! They each had their own idea of what he could do for them. Many saw him as their ideal show horse and while Brian loved him for that as well, he dreamt of the future possibilities of him as a breeding horse. He thought if Cowboy could produce foals that are as talented and as trainable as he is, then what a great asset to the industry he would be as a sire! Although there were many opportunities to sell him as a gelding, it became really important to Brian that he remain a stallion.

Owners Roger and Robin Gollehon and Kathy and Evan Trommer shared Brian’s dreams and pursued buying him. Roger’s philosophy about breeding is that every time you create a foal it’s like inventing something new. The ‘invention’ of Good Cowboy Margarita will continue to influence the pleasure horse industry on a grand scale! The Good Cowboy Margarita Fan Club includes prominent trainers and many elite breeders of our industry. It’ll be an exciting time when the little Cowboy Margaritas hit the ground but he isn’t finished in the show ring yet.

Cowboy has been a great ambassador to the western pleasure world because of his unique athletic ability and he’s not just limited to western pleasure. As an example of how talented he is and what a great mind he has, in three weeks time he learned enough about changing leads to turn the heads of all who saw him. He’ll continue to show in western pleasure as well as western riding and trail. He’s the kind of horse that, whether you know anything about horses or not, you can tell he’s something special.

WHAT A GREAT SHOW HORSE!!!
