Members of the AQHA Professional Horsemen Crisis Fund and NSBA Trainers Crisis Fund are joining forces to spur on the cause of crisis relief for families who make their living as professionals within the horse industry.
Once again, Holly Spagnola has been commissioned to create a unique custom made pair of spurs to be auctioned off at the Reichert Celebration. According to Ruth Ellen, Chair of the AQHA Professional Horsemen Crisis Fund, two years ago the pair sold for $102,000. The funds were divided between AQHA and NSBA to be utilized for crisis relief. This year’s spurs will feature a sculpted top line of a pleasure horse with the saddle engraved and stones on the Conchos. The blanket will feature colored enamel and pattering. Funds received go to help professionals who experience demonstrable hardship and have evidence of financial need.
This is a major benevolent act of horsemen helping horsemen. NSBA established its crisis fund in 2002 and Steve Heckaman has been the driving force behind the effort. Steve has served as chair since its inception. AQHA Professional Horsemen Association established its fund in 2007 with Ruth Ellen at the helm as chair. Throughout the year both groups conduct fund raising efforts to keep the funds growing and provide both a variety of support for trainers and their families. Those in need can request assistance with the following: monetary support, financial counseling, personal support, clothing, equipment, and household supplies. For more information on eligibility you can access both AQHA and NSBA websites. If you are interested in supporting the fund contact the committee chairs or the Associations directly.
