For years, like many of you, I have been loyally glued to my television on the first Saturday of every May to watch the most exciting two minutes in American sports. This year I traded in my Panasonic remote for tickets to the 135th running of The Oaks and The Kentucky Derby. With friends in tow, I stood in the presence of great horses, world-renown horseman, celebrities and time-honored traditions
Calvin Borel, the seventh jockey in the history of the equine mega event to win both races in the same year, probably caused more finish line shock than any other jockey in my lifetime.
The entire day felt surreal when the first horses appeared from the barns for their walk to the paddocks. I was overwhelmed with anticipation and the pain caused to my right arm by my overly enthusiastic wife.
If you are reading this post you or someone you know is probably infected with the disease commonly known as HC, or Horse Crazy. I am convinced that the only cure is death or poverty. I hope that many of you who test positive for this genetically inferior trait will also get the chance to experience the singing of My Old Kentucky Home live some day. Even in the absence of mint juleps, I shared an emotional intensity that would weaken the knees of John Wayne himself.
Truly, the Kentucky Derby is one to remember.
