Winning three world championships in one day is something most people only dream of. For Rita Crundwell of Dixon, Illinois, it was a reality at the 2008 World Show. Rita started the day early with a win in the amateur 2-year-old mares with her homebred Shes Promiscuous. From there she swept the board in amateur 3-year-old stallions, placing first with all five judges with another homebred, her stallion Acoolest. Rita finished off the day with a particularly special win in amateur performance halter stallions with her hunt seat horse, Good I Will Be.

Amateur 3-Year-Old Geldings, Amateur Aged Geldings – VERN HABIGHORST
Leading two previous world champion geldings, Vernon Habighorst of Phoenix, deftly grabbed two more world titles Wednesday morning, November 12, in amateur 3-year-old and aged geldings with A Kid By Design and Telusive Tide.

Amateur Aged Stallions – SUSAN GROEB
Before the 2008 World Show, Susan Groeb of Onsted, Michigan, had only shown her stallion, Grand Slam Touchdown, one time – at the 2007 All American Quarter Horse Congress, and they won reserve in 3-year-old stallions. On November 12, Susan led him for the second time, down the Gateway of Champions for the World Show amateur stallions class. They walked out with the gold trophy. “This is a chance of a lifetime,” Susan said in her in-the-arena interview. “It’s such an honor and a privilege to be out here with this fine animal, and the rest of these fine individuals.”

Amateur Weanling Geldings, Amateur Yearling Stallions – RITA CRUNDWELL
Two homebreds captured two 2008 halter world championships on November 13 for Rita Crundwell of Dixon, Illinois. First up was Jewel By Execute, a son of Rita’s multiple world champion mare, Jewels By Tiffany; he took the amateur weanling geldings title. Three classes later, Rita took the win in amateur yearling stallions with Subtle, a son of Phenomenal Ms, another of Rita’s multiple world champion mares. She’s a consummate showman who knows her stock, and is quick to thank the people around her like AQHA Pro Horseman Jim McKillips, manager of the Meri-J Ranch.

Amateur Weanling Mares – CHIP RAINWATER
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree for 2008 amateur world champion weanling mare E Lady. Her mother, Miss Scintillation by Statuatory and out of Im So Irresistible, was the 2001 world champion weanling mare in the open division and the amateur reserve world champion. Chip Rainwater and his wife, Lorraine, of Hayesville, North Carolina, bred and raised the filly, making the win especially meaningful.

Amateur Weanling Stallions – RICK ADAMS
Rick Adams and his father, Dick, were beside themselves with excitement and gratitude after winning their first amateur world championship with their homebred weanling stallion, Say CK. After 25 years of breeding, this win was worth the wait. They were first under four judges and second under the fifth in a class of 21 entries.

Amateur Yearling Mares – PENNY KING
As Penny King brought Lovin My Career Move forward to accept their world champion trophy for yearling mares, Penny’s parents Gene and Sue King came into the arena to celebrate with her. They own the tall chestnut filly and Penny showed her in a pen against 15 other yearling mares.

Amateur Performance Halter Mares – NICCI DEMINT
With two firsts, two seconds and a fourth, Fancy Diamond Kid was announced the world champion amateur performance halter mare at the World Show Thursday afternoon, November 13. The mare was also the world champion performance halter mare at the 2008 Bayer Select World Championship Show, where Nicci’s husband, Greg, showed her.

Amateur Performance Halter Geldings – BOB LINES
Though Bob Lines of Sarasota, Florida, may not have expected to win amateur performance halter geldings with Photons All Round for the second year in a row, it is safe to say winning the 2008 title was a pleasant surprise. The gray gelding, who qualified in amateur heading and heeling at the 2008 World Show, may have seen the last of his halter days. Bob said he’s better suited for the roping pen.

Amateur Yearling Geldings, Amateur Aged Mares – RITA CRUNDWELL
Rita Crundwell opened November 14, the last day of amateur halter competition at the 2008 World Show, with another world championship, this time in amateur yearling geldings with her homebred STKS Coolest. She led horses in two additional classes before taking the win in amateur aged mares with Bob Bob Barann, a mare she bought to eventually be a broodmare. Her last class of Bank of America Amateur Week, Rita led the mare around with her to throw her signed world champion t-shirts to the crowd.

Amateur 2-Year-Old Stallions – DARLENE TURNER
It was another touchdown for the Turner Bradshaw crew, thanks to Darlene Turner and Emagined. With crowds reading the November 14 issue of the Journal at the World newsletter featuring a photo of former Pittsburg Steeler Terry Bradshaw, Darlene tallied another win for the team in amateur 2-year-old stallions. Darlene and her husband, AQHA Professional Horseman and Team Wrangler Member Ted Turner, recently moved to Thackerville, Oklahoma, to foster a partnership with Terry.

Amateur 2-Year-Old Geldings – JOY STEHNEY
As the placings were lined up under each judge, Joy Stehney and Cabernet Kid were ensured a trophy with three thirds, one second and one first. However, Joy wasn’t sure where she would end up when the final placings were announced. So as Josh Weakly and One Silent Kopy were called for the reserve champion spot, Joy broke down in tears, realizing that she had finally won a world championship title.
