It was a busy day at the James B. Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh, North Carolina, as the Little Futurity completed its final day of classes. Highlights of the day included the Heart Of Stone Western Pleasure fundraising class, and the NSBA Little Futurity Non-Pro 3 & Older $7,500 Limited Horse Western Pleasure.
Heart Of Stone Brings Horsemen Together
One of the other special moments of the Little Futurity was when horsemen and women came together to ride in a Western Pleasure class to benefit the Heart Of Stone Foundation, established by Shane and Holt Pope in memory of their son, Stone.
Cleve Wells showed Cool Poco Dot to the win, but the funds raised for the foundation were the really winners. “It is such a good cause,” Cleve said. “It means a lot to be able to show in the class because we are all a big family. It’s one of those moments you remember years from now.”
Deanna Green was the highest placing Youth, while Kari Craft was the highest placing Amateur in the class, earning special awards. Each exhibitor received a t-shirt, and top ten places received a special Heart Of Stone electric box fan.
For the Popes, the Foundation is all about helping other families. “When Stone was in the hospital, we were fortunate to be able to stay with him for six weeks, but not everyone can do that,” Shane said. “Many families couldn’t afford to be gone that long and had to leave their child to go back to work. It was heart wrenching.”
“We started doing Hope bags, where we put gift cards for gas, Walmart and Target, as well as other supplies like toiletries, a t-shirt, a water bottle, a cooler, anything that we thought might be supportive to the families. We’ve helped 50 families so far,” noted Holt.
Next, the Popes plan to help supply AED defibrillators. “We plan to start small in our county, but eventually we would like to be able to sponsor AEDs wherever we can,” Holt said.
Donations can still be made to the Heart Of Stone Foundation by visiting the foundation’s website, www.heartofstonefoundation.com or visiting the Facebook page. Interested donors can also contact Holt Pope directly.

The second day of futurity classes at the Little Futurity in Raleigh, North Carolina saw a full slate of futurity classes, highlighted by the NSBA Southern Oaks Three and Four Year Old $1,000 Novice Horse Western Pleasure Slot Class.
In a very nice set of 19 three and four year olds, it took a tiebreaker judge to determine who won the awards, but two horse and riders split the first place prize. Shane Pope won the tiebreaker, showing Vital Signs R Stable for Cathy Corrigan Frank, to the first place awards and $8,460. Tied with him was Casey Willis, showing KM We Know Shes Hot for Masterson Farms, also earning $8,460.
“I’ve had her since she was a yearling,” Shane said of the four year old mare. “She was really small as a younger horse. Cathy was extremely patient and gave us the time we needed. We just showed her in Virginia in the maiden class for the first time. She has had more natural ability from Day 1 than any other horse I’ve trained. I just put the time on her – I never taught her anything!”
Finishing out the top ten placings in the class were:
• Third – Lexus Made Lady, shown by Cody Parrish for Anchored Soul LLC, $6,080
• Fourth – Ready Set Lope, Shannon Curl for Debby Brehm, $3,200
• Fifth – Inviting Inthe Dark, Angie Cannizzaro for Randy Kimmel, $2,880
• Sixth – Extremely Good Stuff, Kenny Lakins Jr. for Nancy Wilkerson Ditty, $2,560
• Seventh – Moonlightin, Jeff Long for Liz Long
• Eighth – My Daddys Lazy, Brian Baker for William and Sandy Stevenson
• Ninth – The Born Legacy, Maggie Grandquist for Chavez Enterprises Inc.
• Tenth – Make It Rain, Dawn Baker for April Wooster

The 2016 Little Futurity got underway on Sunday with Trail and Western Riding futurity classes, which showed concurrently with AQHA classes as part of the Tar Heel Classic AQHA Show, held at the James B. Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Larry Little, the show’s founder, established the format in which exhibitors have one go in their AQHA class division, with those also showing in the futurity division going first in the working order. Scores for futurity Non-Pro and Open classes were kept until all age divisions had shown to determine the futurity class winners.
“We started doing this a few years ago, and the exhibitors really like it,” Larry said. “They only have to go once, and they don’t have to prepare their horses a second time for the futurity classes. It’s been pretty well received.”
Trail Champions Named
Sunday began with champions named in Green Trail. Christie Arrington showed Ima Flashy Code Red to the win for Patty and Robert Sweisberger. “She is a lot of fun to show,” Christie said of the four year old red roan mare, known as Fergie. “She was very good today.” (They are pictured above left.)
17 year old Killian Mullen and More To Zip (shown at left) were double champions in the Open and Non-Pro Trail futurity classes.
“She was really good today. The other day, her patterns were OK, but today her patterns had a lot of flow to them, and she was listening to me really well,” Killian said. “She always wants to please you.”
The five year old mare has only been doing Trail for about a year. “We are showing at the Big A, then the AQHYA World Show and the NSBA World Show,” she said.
Winners in Western Riding
Two champions were named in futurity Western Riding classes for the day. Carmen Moss showed Dreamin Of A Zippo to win the Green Western Riding futurity class for owner Barbie Williams, leading the class with a score of 214. (They are shown at right.)
“He was a good boy,” Carmen said. “He is a great lead changer, and he’s picked it up really well. I showed him a little bit last year, but I wanted to save him for the Green class this year. So far that’s been a great decision.”
The eight year old gelding is known as Chase.
In the Open Western Riding futurity, Cheryl Hawkins showed Best In The Dark to the win, scoring a 222.5. (Cheryl is shown at left with Annelise Kimmel Woodard)
Hawkins showed the nine year old stallion for Randy Kimmel. “He gave me a good ride today,” she said. “He’s a good boy, and extremely quiet for a stallion. I’ve been showing him for about five years.”
The Little Futurity continues on Monday with Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle classes, and will feature the signature class, the NSBA Southern Oaks 3 and 4 Year Old $25,000 Added $1,000 Limited Novice Horse Western Pleasure Slot Class.
