Fort Worth, TX—The city of Fort Worth was the backdrop for equestrian competition on an international scale during the 2010 Summer World Championship Paint Horse Show, held June 23 – July 3 at Will Rogers Memorial Center. An annual event, the Summer World Show is home to all Youth world-level competition and all Open and Amateur world-level cattle and reining classes for the Fort Worth-based Association.
The show drew 2,035 entries with 579 horses over the course of 11 days and awarded $300,000 in cash and prizes. In addition to the 118 horse show classes, the Association also hosted the biennial Youth World Games; the Youth Team Tournament; a youth horse judging contest sponsored by Hart Trailers; Paint For A Day, an open all-breed youth horse show; jackpotted open all-breed classes; a Chris Cox clinic and a gift show.
Youth standouts
The focus of the Summer World Show is mainly on the Youth competitors. This year’s show featured 337 Youth horses and 1,312 Youth entries in a full slate of 75 classes, including the Youth Versatility Challenge and Parents’ Western Pleasure. An additional 35 international Youth participated in the Youth World Games.
The overall division high-point and all-around standouts were honored during an awards ceremony on June 29th at the conclusion of Youth classes. Included here is the list of recipients. Interestingly, after Texas with 226 horses entered in Youth competition, California was the state with the second-highest representation of 48 horses, followed by Colorado with 34. A total of 39 states and 4 international countries were represented.
AjPHA leaders elected for 2010-2011 term
The American Junior Paint Horse Association (AjPHA) directors elected their 2010-2011 Executive Committee and Zone Representatives during the course of the show, following the AjPHA National Convention. AjPHA National Directors represent their state, province, or country. They are responsible for directing association business, including voting on by-law changes and electing the AjPHA Executive Committee. National Directors meet annually at the AjPHA National Convention, and are asked for input on association activities throughout the year. Outstanding AjPHA members recognized
One main purpose of the AjPHA program is to build and shape Youth leaders. The Youth Member of the Year, Youth Club of the Year and From the Heart awards recognize those who excel in that capacity, and are presented during the Summer World Show Youth activities.
Lauren Kelly of Brighton, Illinois, was named Youth Member of the Year, and received $1,000 and a custom Gist buckle.
The Club of the Year recognizes outstanding AjPHA regional clubs, which serve to provide an educational and social organization for youth members who share a common interest in the American Paint Horse. AjPHA recognizes the top three clubs with monetary rewards. The Missouri Junior Paint Horse Club was named Club of the Year and received $1,000 sponsored by Carson Underwood; the Gulf Coast Junior Paint Horse Club received $200 for 2nd place; and the Arizona Junior Paint Horse Club received $150 for 3rd place.
APHA corporate partner Markel Insurance sponsors the From the Heart Award, which is presented to the Youth club that demonstrates the most involvement and dedication to the AjPHA’s Presidential Service Project. A $500 check from Markel Insurance was presented to the Gulf Coast Junior Paint Horse Club for their support of the 2009-2010 project “Painted Warriors.”
Youth World Games
AjPHA takes the opportunity to highlight the association’s international members every other year at the Summer World Show with the Youth World Games (YWG). The team competition brought Youth from six countries and the United States together to show in four classes: Western horsemanship, showmanship, hunt seat equitation and trail. All of the horses used for the competition were available through the generosity of their owners, and were all shown in World Show classes throughout the week by their youth owners before being shown in YWG classes.
The Dutch Diamonds claimed the overall victory, with Team USA finishing second and Team Germany third overall. Young equestrians from Canada, Australia, Sweden and Austria also made strong showings and represented their countries very well.
