ATHENS, Ga. –The University of Georgia equestrian team jumped two spots to the No. 1 position, according to the latest Women’s Intercollegiate Equestrian National Coaches Poll. It is the first time this season that a team other than Auburn, has been ranked at the top. Since the previous coaches poll release, Georgia has gone on to defeat top-ranked Auburn in Auburn, Ala., as well as No. 4 Baylor and Fresno State.
Georgia owns a 10-1 record on the season and is currently riding a nine-meet win streak that includes a pair of wins over Auburn and South Carolina, as well as three more wins over ranked opponents.
Auburn drops to No. 2, followings its losses to Georgia and South Carolina. Texas A&M drops from second to third, as the Aggies are now 7-2 this season. Coming off wins against Baylor and Texas A&M, Oklahoma State moves up from sixth to fourth.
South Carolina maintained its fifth-place ranking for the second week in a row, despite wins over then-No. 1 Auburn and then-No. 4 Baylor.
Having lost three of its last four meets, Baylor falls from fourth to sixth. Kansas State holds steady at No. 7. New Mexico States moves up one spot to No. 8 after winning two meets in a row, while SMU falls one spot to ninth.
TCU rounds out the top-10, as the Horned Frogs get set to face South Dakota State and Georgia over the next two weeks.
The collegiate coaches competing under the National Collegiate Equestrian Association’s umbrella initiated the national poll.
The poll will be released bi-monthly, with the next announcement scheduled for March 14, 2012.
