Kim Rich Memorial Pays $3,500 to Daughter of RL Best Of Sudden

This Memorial Day weekend was a time for individuals to honor soldiers who have passed away serving our country. This weekend in Montgomery, Alabama was also a time for horse show competitors to honor friends and loved ones. Amateur Jan Shepherd Pittman of Panama City, Florida was instrumental in raising money and putting together a class at the Alabama Sizzler to honor her friend, Kim Rich, who passed away in September from an extended illness.

“My last memory of Kim showing was in Montgomery, Alabama in last year’s Green Western Pleasure during Memorial Day weekend,” Pittman states. “It is a compelling memory, because she loved competing in this event more than any other. The payout of nearly $7,000 showed how much Kim was loved and admired by her peers.”
The memorial class coincided with the Green Western Pleasure and exhibitors had to show both Friday and Sunday to all six judges. Each day the class had nearly 30 exhibitors and they split the class and then had a final. The overall winner was Megan Hawkins aboard Shes So Posh who took home a check for $3,500. The 2010 sorrel mare is by RL Best Of Sudden and Hawkins has been leasing her from Pete Garcia of Ocala, Florida, since
March of this year. Shes So Posh (Foxy) is currently in training with Tyler
Achtenhagen.

“It was so great to see everyone come out to watch and support the class. The stands were packed full both days,” says Megan Hawkins. “Kim was a great horsewoman and had many green horses coming up through her program. To hold a green western pleasure memorial was a great idea. The way Jan (Pittman) set up the awards and money in the class was brilliant. Everyone in the top ten got a prize and money back. Kim’s family came out to present the awards. It’s always hard to lose someone in the horse family, but it was so great to see this class held in Kim’s memory.”
Hawkins adds, “I am so honored to have won this class as a girl and an amateur.”
“Tyler usually shows her in the Green but this weekend he let me show her,” Hawkins explains. “He showed another horse of Pete Garcia’s, and we ended placing first and second overall. Tyler has done a great job with this mare, and I have only been able to show her a handful of times as I have been showing on the West Coast trying to get my other horse qualified. I am so excited to show her this summer in the non pro limited horse futurities.”
Pete Garcia of Ocala, Florida owned the first and second place horses in this class. Garcia told GoHorseShow that Shes So Posh and Its Hot In Ocala are full siblings by Masterson Farms’ stallion, RL Best of Sudden and out of Ima Hot invitation.

“I took about a three year break and now I’m back showing and breeding on a smaller scale,” Garcia explained. “I knew Kim well and it was an honor to have the top two horses in the class and it was great that everything all came together to be a successful outing for our horses.”
