Level 1 West Postponed: Three Horses Test Positive for EHV-1 in Las Vegas

UPDATE Due to the recent confirmed EHV-1 positive cases reported in competition horses at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center this week, AQHA, the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center and state veterinarian of Nevada collectively decided to postpone the AQHA West Level 1 Championships.

Read more here about the decision

The Nevada Department of Agriculture has received reports that two horses that were in attendance at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Stallion Stakes March 30 – April 6 event have tested positive for the respiratory, non-neurologic form of Equine Herpes Virus Type 1 (EHV-1). One horse was from California, and the second was from Clark County and is under quarantine order by Dr. J. J. Goicoechea, the Nevada state veterinarian. In addition, there has been one unrelated case of EHV-1 reported in an unvaccinated horse with neurologic signs in Clark County, Nevada.

The  South Point Arena & Equestrian Center has taken biosecurity measures to clean and disinfect the facility. Horses arriving in Las Vegas next week for the AQHA West Level 1 Championships will have their temperatures checked upon arrival by a veterinarian. As a reminder, exhibitors will need to pack their paperwork. To get onto the show grounds, and to check in at the show office, exhibitors will need a Coggins/EIA issued within six months of the show, health papers within 30 days of the show, a copy of your horse’s registration, plus your AQHA membership card. AQHA will also provide thermometers to exhibitors so they can continue to check their horses daily.
