About the Cover

Football and equestrian phenom Grant Mastin is featured on the cover of the July AQHYA World Show issue of GoMag. The seventeen-year-old from Jackson, Ohio, is going into his senior year of high school. In Oklahoma City, Mastin will be showing Hand Made Machine (Carl) in the Trail and Western Riding. Carl is a nine-year-old gelding by Machine Made that his family purchased his three-year-old year. “He is a once-in-a-lifetime horse, and I have loved every minute of our journey,” Grant told us.

Grant’s goals for this year include hopefully coming home with a gold globe. “It has been a goal of mine since I was a small fry. I’m also looking forward to the NSBA World and the Congress, two of my favorite shows.”

Currently, under the guidance of Ryan Cottingim and Mandi Gately, Mastin is looking forward to the big shows. “A lot of people don’t remember that I rode with Ryan as a small fry when he worked for Tommy Sheets, so being with him now is like picking up where we left off. It has been gratifying to come full circle.”

Grant’s favorite accomplishment showing horses happened last year when he won the Youth Western Riding at the NSBA World Show. “I wasn’t supposed to be there to show it, but I missed my flight the day before and had the opportunity to stay. Still being very novice in the class, I didn’t have the highest expectations for myself going into it, despite coming off a very good Youth World. But, ultimately, I ended up having a great go, and it was a very exciting moment for me.”

As far as football, his favorite accomplishment on the field was going undefeated his sophomore season. “That season was so exhilarating because I was able to lead our team in tackles with over 120. Also, playing a huge role on the defensive side of the ball, it was a season that will always be special to me. That season landed me my first All-State honors, which I’ll never forget.”

Mastin is very excited about his senior football season. “We have some really exciting games on our schedule. Our team has worked hard in the off-season, and we are prepared to have a great season.”

Grant says his life is jam-packed with football and showing horses these days. “Luckily, I have a great support system that helps me balance it all.”

Best of luck to Grant on his senior season and to everyone competing at this year’s AQHYA World Show.
