An Open Letter to My Horse Show Friends

There’s no doubt that horse show people are their own special breed. Sometimes, the only people who really get us are those who also spend their weekends traveling the country with our four legged friends. Our friendships may be hard to describe to those who don’t live in our world, but for us, we wouldn’t trade them for anything else.

Our horse show friends are irreplaceable. While they are usually also our competition, that doesn’t stop us from building friendships. While these friendships may be separated by many miles, they have a strength that cannot be found anywhere else but in the horse show world.

When given the opportunity to tell my horse show friends just how I felt about them, I would say this…

To My Horse Show Friends

I can’t remember exactly how we became friends. Maybe I asked you to borrow boot polish, or my trainer offered you coffee, or you complimented me on a job well done on a pattern, but regardless, I’m so thankful we made that connection.

When we first met, you were just another person I was competing against. I must say, shows become a lot more fun when you’re competing with your best friend. Having you in my life relieves so much stress, because I know someone else who is in the exact same boat as me. Going to shows is no longer just a chance to compete, but its a weekend long family reunion.

Horse show friends are just like any other long distance best friends in that most of our conversations take place over text message and phone calls. We could be on different sides of the country, but I know you’ll know (and care) about exactly whats going on with my life, as I do for you. I know I can count on you for an early morning good luck text before a show, or a late night venting session when one of us is particularly stressed.

While much of our friendship may take place hundreds of miles from each other, when we do finally reconnect, its a memorable experience. That first hug with your best friend after not seeing them for months is without a doubt one of the most comforting things you could feel. We may only spend a few weekends together during the year, but you can guarantee that we don’t waste any time making up for it.

While distance may keep us from being there for the little moments, I can always trust that you will be there for me during the big moments. If you can’t be in the stands for the major shows, you can guarantee you’ll be watching on the live feed and will be there first person to call or text after the class, as I would be for you.

If we do happen to be at a show together, you can guarantee those will be the best days of the year. The best horse show memories are made in the late nights with the friends you only get to see a few days a year.

Not only can I count on you for a good time, but I can count on you for advice when I need it. You understand me better than anyone else, because we share similar passions. Just as I can always trust that you are there for me, I am always there for you.

Thank you for teaching me how to be humble, and to think of more than myself while showing. While everyone loves to win, watching your best friend find success is just as rewarding. I’ve found that cheering you on and watching you succeed is just as rewarding as finding success myself.

I cannot say thank you enough to my incredible horse show friends for everything they do. I’m proud to know you and have you in my life. Thank you for the late night phone calls, the hugs after months apart, and the support in every aspect of life. You are truly irreplaceable.
