Findlay (13abc Action News) – When you think of college, horses probably don’t come to mind. But one of the top equestrian programs in the nation is right here in northwest Ohio.
Students at the University of Findlay’s Western Farm are holding the school’s 12th annual Spring Horse Sale this weekend. The event brings in tens of thousands of dollars.
A riding arena may not be your typical classroom but there’s plenty of learning going on for both horses and humans. Laura Elser came all the way from New Hampshire to be part of the program. When she graduates this spring, she’ll head to California for a job at a training stable,”I’m in the saddle about four hours a day, seven days a week here at the farm. I love every minute of it. I get to do what I love each and every day.”
The students will have careers in and out of the saddle, everything from training to handling the business side of the industry. Steve Brown is the Director of Western Riding, “People often don’t realize the scope of the horse industry. In addition to riding careers there is also plenty to do on the business side. It is a multi-billion dollar industry. The students who come here are here for a career, they want to spend their lives doing this and making money.”
