COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A new Equine Complex on the Texas A&M University campus is said to be the biggest and best in the nation.
Hundred of people showed up to be among the first to see the new center on opening day. The Thomas G. Hildebrand, DVM ’56 Equine Complex, located just off F and M Road, was officially opened on Wednesday.
“Opening this building officially means that it’s ours. We’re ready to go to work in it. And we’re ready to use it for our students and our faculty,” said Jim Heird, Executive Professor and Coordinator of the Equine Initiative.
Heird said the complex is the culmination of many tough years of planning.”It’s absolutely the best equine facility in the country today, especially at a university,” said Heird.
A number of construction workers were injured when a portion of the equine center collapsed in June of last year during construction.
According to OSHA investigators, the collapse happened due to a series of infractions.
Despite all that, Heird said the complex was finished on time.”We’re finished very much on schedule, so the collapse itself was not an issue for us,” said Heird.
Ultimately, the complex will provide a home several programs – including teaching and outreach programs.
