On August 8 at the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show, Katerina Mendel of Ann Arbor, Michigan, walked, trotted and cantered her way to her first world championship. “It was everything I imagined and more,” Katerina said in her exclusive Journal interview. “It was overwhelming. It felt amazing, just realizing that I did it and I worked so hard and I got through it. It was just wonderful.”

Paige Stopperich and Cowboys R Hot Win Hunt Seat Equitation

Seventeen-year-old Paige Stopperich has a great attitude about the Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show: “The atmosphere at the Youth World is so intense because everyone wants to do really well. But then, the parade of teams is a realization that this is really all just about trying your best, having fun and meeting new people.” She couldn’t have been more thrilled August 8 during the hunt seat equitation finals, when she and one of her best friends, Rachel Kolb, were the last two names to be called.

Roberts and Whatscookngoodlookin Win Gold in Western Pleasure

Hillary Roberts of Edmond, Oklahoma, “couldn’t be happier” with her bay mare Whatscookngoodlookin – she carried Hillary to the western pleasure world championship at the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show. “(It’s) pretty surreal right now, I don’t think it’s sunk in yet,” Hillary told The American Quarter Horse Journal. “It’s what I’ve always dreamt of doing. It’s unreal. I’m pretty happy.”

Gabby Lofton and Lil Bit Western Win Gold in Final Youth Year

Twenty-two riders lined up for the trail finals at the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show on August 7 in Oklahoma City. That number had been whittled down from 157 qualified entries August 4 in the prelims. It took a 223 to make the finals. It was a tough group of competitors who finally made it through the equally tough Tim “The Trail Man” Kimura course – elevated lope overs, challenging stops and a mid-course bridge.

First-Time Finalist; First-Time World Champion

“As soon as they started calling numbers, I was, like, I don’t really care!” Megan Overberg of Hillsboro, Ohio, was just happy to make the horsemanship finals at the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show. When it came time to line up for the awards, she was already happy with her 1996 gelding, Invitation To Show, no matter what.

A Win On a Prayer for Rebecca Anderson and OK Shes Unzipped

The crowd was unusually loud when Rebecca Anderson of Gothenburg, Nebraska, and her 2004 mare, OK Shes Unzipped, finished their pattern, seventh in the go order for the showmanship finals at the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show. They had performed it well, and Rebecca knew it walking out, patting “Invy’s” neck. But those in the crowd – especially parents Dan and Andra Anderson, sister Ebony, and brother Kiefer – knew it was even more amazing that she’d shown in the prelims at all, much less made the finals. Two weeks ago, Rebecca’s dream of competing looked finished.

13 & U Rider Gentry Cherry Takes Top Spot in Eq Over Fences

Seventh grader Gentry Cherry thought she was going to throw up.She woke up early August 6 realizing her day ahead at the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show was a doozie. Gentry, of Guthrie, Oklahoma, was facing five back-to-back classes with three different horses. Not many kids can say the same.

A Mother-Daughter Win for Horse and Exhibitor

Taylor Jo Snow, of Columbia, Louisiana, continued the family tradition long before her name was called on August 4 as the new world champion. Taylor and Amazem won the 3-year-old fillies class at the 2013 Built Ford Tough Youth World Championship Show, but this was not the only amazing feat the pair accomplished.

Mary Brown and Zippos Petite Prince Score 236 for Win in Western Riding

With a 236, Mary Hannah Brown of Kelseyville, California, and Zippos Petite Prince came awful close to some Jim Norick Arena western riding record-setting scores. Although it didn’t beat the record 239 set by Vital Signs Are Good in the 2010 senior western riding, it was good enough to win the 2013 youth world championship in the class on August 3.

Ireland Cofrancesco Wins First Gold Trophy with Vincenzo Zini

In 2006, AQHA Past President Peter J. Cofrancesco III showed Sheza Virtuous Lady to a world championship in amateur aged mares. Seven years later, Peter’s daughter showed Sheza Virtuous Lady’s son to a world championship in youth 3-year-old geldings. On August 3, Ireland Cofrancesco led Vincenzo Zini to her first world championship at the Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City.

Another Win for Cooper Dobbs and JBees Private Jet

Eleven-year-old Cooper Dobbs is no stranger to the show ring. Cooper, from Jonesboro, Arkansas, added to his long list of accomplishments August 2 at the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City. Cooper won the 3-year-old geldings championship in 2012 with JBees Private Jet, then the pair returned to Ford Youth World to earn the championship in the aged geldings division. This year was Cooper’s third at Ford Youth World.

One Hot Amigo and Kaylee Rampey Finally Earn a Gold Trophy

One Hot Amigo turned up the heat August 2 in Oklahoma City at the Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show. With owner Kaylee Rampey of Edmond, Oklahoma, at the shank, “Amigo” was first under all five judges. “He’s very sweet and likes to be a little showoff sometimes,” Kaylee said. “He’s the best horse ever. I’ll tell him he’s beautiful and he’s the best horse to me.”

Paulina Martz and Onlythebestchocolate Celebrate First in Performance Halter Mares


She couldn’t stop crying and her mom says she never does that. But winning a youth world championship tends to do that to you, especially if it’s your first. Paulina Marie Martz of Blacklick, Ohio, and her 2007 mare, Onlythebestchocolate, won the first finals class of the 2013 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show – performance halter mares. “I was overwhelmed,” Paulina said. “I don’t think the joy and the ‘Oh, my gosh, I just won the world,’ has set in yet.”
