On March 21, 2013, there was a fire at a therapeutic riding center, Vail Meadows located in Oregon, Ohio. The fire burned down the entire barn and took the lives of ten horses and almost all of them were beloved therapy horses. A few other farm animals perished as well. One of the horses was even an ex-police horse that helped protect the streets of Toledo, Ohio for many years. The estimated damage is over $100,000.
“I have volunteered at Vail for over a year and I know the work that they do is amazing,” says Shannon Novin, who is a Vail Meadows volunteer. “The lost is not only devastating due to the loss of the horses, but because of the disabled rider’s loss as well. Many riders rode the same horse for many years and grew very attached to the point that they would only ride his or her own horse.”
